Gerhard Uhlenbruck (born June 17, 1929 in Cologne ) is a German physician (immunologist) and aphorist . He is an emeritus full professor at the University of Cologne and lives in Cologne.

Life

Uhlenbruck was born in 1929 as the first child of the university professor for internal medicine Paul Uhlenbruck in the university clinics in Cologne-Lindenthal . The lawyer Wilhelm Uhlenbruck is his brother. Following his Abitur in 1949 at the Kreuzgasse grammar school in Cologne, he began studying medicine at the University of Cologne . After the preliminary medical examination , he went to the Physiological-Chemical Institute, where he had already worked on his doctoral thesis (on acetal phosphatides) experimentally. After research stays at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine in London and at the University of Cambridge (cell electrophoresis), he was entrusted with the management of the Department of Biochemistry and Tumor Immunology at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research , which was newly established in Cologne in 1963 . There he was in 1964 for the subject Immunobiology habilitation . He was appointed full professor in 1968. From 1974 until his retirement in 1996 he was director of the Institute for Immunobiology at the University Clinic in Cologne .

After that, he became increasingly involved in the field of prevention through sport and with the subject of running therapy, for example as a guest lecturer at the German Sport University and at the trainer academy in Cologne. He also began to work on the “Sport and Cancer” project of the State Sports Association in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In the book Seziert (2013), his close friendship and collaboration with the East Berlin forensic doctor Otto Prokop , including on the subject of lectins , was discussed.

On June 22nd, 2019, Cornel Wachter and Margit Hähner organized a party in the Odeon cinema in Cologne on the occasion of Uhlenbruck's 90th birthday. Film, readings, talks with Ingo Froböse, Rolly Brings, District Mayor Andreas Hupke, authors of VS Cologne or Mark Benecke (as a video recording) were on the program.

Uhlenbruck began his sporting career in high school, first as a boxer, then as a runner. He was:

  • German runner-up in the cycling doctors (road races & time trials).

Medical publications and memberships

In addition to publications in the field of immunobiology ( Immunobiology - An Introduction 1971) and the textbook on human blood and serum groups written in collaboration with Otto Prokop , Gerhard Uhlenbruck is also co-editor of scientific journals and a member of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology and the Society for Biochemistry and molecular biology . He wrote the chapters The Lipoids and Proteins of the Brain (with Hildegard Debuch) and Immunobiological Aspects of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System for the Handbook of Neurosurgery published by Springer in 1968 .

Uhlenbruck is an honorary member of the German Society for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology , the Association of Cross-Country Doctors (DVLÄ) , the German Association for Health Sports and Sports Therapy (DVGS) , the German Society for Immunotherapy , the Interest Group for Long Distance Runners and the International Society for Exercise and Immunology (ISEI). Gerhard Uhlenbruck was the 1st chairman of the Society for Complementary Orthomolecular Medicine (GKOM) and a member of Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (USA) and the Cologne Academy for Complementary Medicine (AKOM). He is the patron and moderator of the congress for orthomolecular medicine in Cologne and laudator of the annual Via Biona Science Prize for Micronutrients . Uhlenbruck is a member of the Association of German Writers and the Federal Association of German Doctor-Doctors . He is also a founding member of the Cologne Association for Marathon eV
