In 1619 he was appointed preacher at the Marienkirche in Lübeck. In 1626 he moved to the Jakobikirche as main pastor. His term of office was shaped by the effects of the Thirty Years' War and the construction of the spire in 1657/58. Since 1653, Gerhard Winter was also senior of the Lübeck Spiritual Ministry and thus both the opposite (as the elected representative of the pastorate) and the deputy of the superintendent Menno Hanneken .

In 1661 he suddenly died “on Sunday Oculi , in the morning bell 8 in his confessional , as he now wanted to go to Cantzel”.

An epitaph on the north side of the first south pillar commemorated him. It consisted of his portrait and life data as well as an eight-verse German poem, but was no longer available at the beginning of the 20th century.
