Since 1985 she has been married to Sven Doberschütz, the brother of the Olympic rowing champion Jens Doberschütz . After her career, Gerlinde Doberschütz worked as a teacher at a regular school in Wasungen for sport and biology.

For her Olympic victory in Seoul Doberschütz was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold. In 1986 she received this medal in silver.
