Germán Cáceres (composer)

Germán Cáceres (born July 9, 1954 in San Salvador ) is a Salvadoran composer, conductor and music teacher.

Cáceres studied counterpoint, harmony and form theory with Esteban Servellón (1968–1971) and with Ion Cubicec (1971–1972). From 1973 to 1978 he studied chamber music and oboe with Ronald Roseman and composition with David Diamond and Stanley Wolfe at the Juilliard School of Music in New York . He took private composition lessons in New York with Julián Orbón , conducting lessons with José Serebrier , Ricardo del Carmen (1978–79) and Alejandro Muñoz Ciudad Real (1979–80). From 1987 to 1989, he completed postgraduate studies with Jonathan D. Kramer at the University of Cincinnati .

From 1979 to 1983 Cáceres was conductor of the Orquesta de Cámara de El Salvador , from 1985 to 1999 and from 2002 chief conductor and musical director of the Orquesta Sinfónica de El Salvador . He has also conducted orchestras in Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Uruguay, the USA and Venezuela. From 1993 to 2002 he taught music history at the Universidad Centroamericana José Simeón Cañas in San Salvador and from 2000 to 2002 he was director of arts and culture at the Universidad de El Salvador . He also lectured at California State University , Northridge, and the University of Southern California , Los Angeles in 2001 .
