Jonathan D. Kramer

Jonathan Donald Kramer (born December 7, 1942 in Hartford / Connecticut , † June 2, 2004 in New York City ) was an American composer, musicologist and teacher.

Kramer studied at Harvard University with Pierre Boulez , Leon Kirchner and Billy Jim Layton until 1965 and then completed postgraduate studies with Jean-Claude Éloy , Richard Feliciano , Andrew Imbrie , Roger Sessions and Seymour Shifrin at the University of California , where he graduated in 1967 Master’s degree and 1969 doctor’s degree (Ph.D.). He also studied music theory with David Lewin , music criticism with Joseph Kerman and at Stanford University computer music with John Chowning (1967-68).

Kramer began teaching in 1969 at the University of California, Berkeley and continued it at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio (1970-71), Yale University (1971-78), the Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati (1978-90) and from 1988 continued at Columbia University until his death . In addition, he was a guest lecturer among others at the Wesleyan University , at King's College London of the University of London , at the Canberra School of Music , the University of Western Australia , the Rockefeller Study Center in Bellagio and the Center for New Music and Technology in Berkeley. His students included Robert Carl , R. Luke DuBois , Jason Eckardt , Paul Phillips , Dalit Warshaw , Rocky J. Reuter , Duncan Neilson and Douglas Geers .

Kramer has written numerous articles for music magazines and the books Listen to the Music (1988) and The Time of Music (1988) and was editor of the volume Time in Contemporary Musical Thought (1993). He left a book on music and postmodernism unfinished. His compositions have been recorded several times and performed at festivals for new music (including the ISCM World Music Days in 1980, 1985 and 1992). He represented the USA twice at the International Rostrum of Composer (1984 and 1992). In addition to well-known American and international orchestras, his works have played by musicians such as Richard Stolzman , Andre-Michel Schub , Aleck Karis , Geoffrey Madge , Deborah Bradley , Jean Kopperud , Roger Smalley , Fred Sherry , Norman Fischer , Eric Bartlett , Mark Peskanov , James Preiss , Gerard Schwarz , Jesus Lopez-Cobos , Michael Gielen , Gerhard Samuel and Theodore Antoniou .
