Yontrakit Corporation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Yontrakit Corporation is a car manufacturer and dealer with headquarters in Thai Bangkok .

The company includes several subsidiaries such as German Auto Work , Yontrakit Kia Motors and YMC Assembly .

history

The origins of the company go back to the used parts dealer Leeleng , which was founded in 1949 .

YMC Assembly was founded in 1972. With the import ban for new vehicles from 1976 to 1989, CKD production boomed. So YMC started assembling various European vehicles.

After the economic crisis in 1997, BMW founded its own domestic manufacturing company a year later. In 1999 Yontrakit set up a CKD production facility for 10,000 vehicles per year in cooperation with Volkswagen . The parts for manufacturing were produced in China.

In 2000, Yontrakit was ranked 42nd among the wealthiest family businesses in Thailand. The annual capacity of 12,000 in 2010 was only 0.69% full.

In 2012, Yontrakit entered into a joint venture with Mitsuoka for vehicle assembly in Thailand. A Mitsouka production by YMC of 12,000 units was targeted for the same year.

Brands and models

The first BMW imported to Thailand was the BMW 700 . The import was carried out by the company Thai Yarnyon Co., Ltd. (belonging to Yontrakit) . In addition to BMW (since 1961 or 1963), Lancia (1965), Peugeot (1972) and Citroën (1976) were among the first representatives . Volkswagen (1986), Audi and Ford (1991), Seat (1995), Kia (1999 or 2002), Skoda and Rolls-Royce (2000) and Mitsuoka (2008) were added later. The Kia Picanto was imported from Malaysia as was the Naza Forza .

Models from the Peugeot, Citroën and BMW brands were assembled. By the late 1980s, Yontrakit had built or imported around 50,000 BMW vehicles in Thailand. The 3780 assembled vehicles of the BMW E12 series were the second largest number that was assembled outside of Germany. One of the special features of the BMW E12 was the standard air conditioning system, which, however, differed from the standard device of this series.

The models produced in the early 1980s included BMW 320 , 520, Citroën GS and CX , Peugeot 504 , Lancia Beta and Coupé. Other later models were the Peugeot 406 (from 1997, of which, for example, only 96 were assembled in 2003) and the BMW 5-series also for BMW Manufacturing (Thailand) (until 2003). In the early 2000s, the Kia Carnival , the VW Passat (2000-2003) and the Audi A6 (2000-2003) were assembled.

The company currently produces Volkswagen models and Hyundai minibuses. It is also active as an automotive supplier .
