German Carlos Greull (born March 14, 1946 in Bogotá , Colombia ) is a Swiss theater actor , director , composer and musician. He has mostly lived in Switzerland since 1953.

Life

Carlos Greull was born to European emigrants. The father, Carl Greull, from Czechoslovakia, was a musician and musicologist, the mother, Elsa geb. Isenschmid, Swiss, wrote short stories and poems. Carlos Greull completed training as an actor and musician in Zurich, Basel and Bern. The most important teachers were the actor Ilya Duwan, in turn a student of Konstantin Stanislavski . He studied piano with Sava Savoff at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK and with Jürg Wyttenbach at the Basel Music Academy . He obtained a diploma in flute from the Swiss Music Education Association. He completed masterclasses with the conductor Pierre Boulez . He also took classes in classical and modern singing for a long time. In 1970 he founded the Studio for Music and Theater in Liestal, where he produced thematic performances. At the same time he took part in the experimentally oriented "Monday evenings" at the Basel Theater under the direction of Erich Holliger . Alone or with his own ensembles under different names (Freie Bühne Bern, Theater die Brücke, Operissima), he played on stages throughout the German-speaking area (Zurich, Bern, Basel, Vienna, Linz, Innsbruck, Dortmund, Kiel, Stuttgart and others). He has appeared as an actor, pianist, flautist, singer and conductor. He initially composed avant-garde music. This is how u. a. the piano cycle "To New Stars" based on the eponymous cycle of pictures by his stepfather Hans Zulauf, for which his mother wrote texts. Greull has also been working as a musical composer since 2010. As an author, he published articles on cultural topics in magazines ("Talks" Bern, "Lazarus" Kiel, "Jahreszeiten" Vienna). His book "Art and Community" was published in 1987 by Gauke-Verlag . Greull wrote several dramas and staged his own as well as other plays.

On stage he embodied character roles such as Antonio Salieri in Alexander Sergejewitsch Puschkin , Claudio in Hugo von Hofmannsthal's " The Gate and Death ", the village judge Adam in Heinrich von Kleist's "Broken Jug" and many others. Since 1986 own cabaret programs have been the focus. In scenes and songs, Greull takes a stand on political and social issues. Greull organized most of the productions himself. He also, but seldom, played on existing theaters, for example in Zurich, Basel, Vienna, Kiel and other places. The highlights of his musical work were the orchestral work 12plus2 (1995), the opera satire "Des Teufels Bock" (2002) and several chamber music works.

He avoided sound and image recordings, as direct contact with the audience was always the most important criterion for him. In 1966 he recorded the piano part for Paul Burkhard's record "Noah" , in the 1990s he recorded texts for a German teaching aid, and on the CD "Musical Miriam" (2011) he recorded a song by Mr. Steel Listen. Carlos Greull (he only uses his first name German in dealings with authorities) has lived in Stein am Rhein since 2012 .
