history

Gerry Marsden (2011)

Gerry Marsden (born September 24, 1942 ) and his brother Freddie (born October 23, 1940 - December 9, 2006 ) from Liverpool founded the band The Mars Bars . With the choice of the name they hoped for support from a well-known confectionery manufacturer; instead they faced legal action and changed the band name to The Pacemakers . Other members of the band were the pianist Arthur Mack, who was replaced a short time later by Les Maguire (born December 27, 1941 ), and the bass guitarist Les Chadwick (born March 11, 1943 - † December 26, 2019 ).

Brian Epstein , the manager of the Beatles , signed Gerry & the Pacemakers as the second band. From 1964 to 1966 they had a number of hits. Her first three singles were all number 1 in the UK . Her version of the musical song You'll Never Walk Alone became particularly popular . In the version of Gerry & the Pacemakers it became the unofficial anthem of the football club FC Liverpool and the official anthem of Borussia Dortmund . The band even made a film, Ferry Cross the Mersey (1965), whose title song of the same name also became a huge hit. However, the group's popularity began to decline as early as late 1965, possibly due to their suits and short hair image, which became increasingly old-fashioned during the 1960s. The group disbanded in 1967.

The piece Ferry Cross the Mersey was re-recorded in 1989 on the occasion of the Hillsborough disaster by Gerry Marsden and the other Liverpool artists The Christians , Holly Johnson , Paul McCartney and Stock Aitken Waterman . The single stayed at number 1 on the British charts for three weeks.
