Gerti Töpfer (born June 30, 1953 in Elbingerode (Harz) ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 2003 to the end of May 2014, she was Lord Mayor of the large district town of Riesa in the Saxon district of Meißen .

Life and work

Töpfer grew up in Elbingerode (Harz) . After graduating from high school in Wernigerode in 1972 , she studied at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . In 1976 she moved to Riesa and was a sports and biology teacher. At the then extended high school “Max Planck” she also exercised the function of a class leader for the Abitur level (grades 11-12) in the 1980s. From 1992 she was the headmistress of the Manfred-von-Ardenne-Gymnasium Riesa for ten years (since 2002 it has been incorporated into the Städtische Gymnasium Riesa ). From 2002 until she took office as Lord Mayor in October 2003, she was head of department at the regional school authority in Leipzig.

Potter joined their first choice for mayor in July 2003 as a non-party candidate of the CDU at the CDU, she joined a few days with after the election. She was re-elected in August 2010. Gerti Töpfer announced in April 2014 that she wanted to retire at the end of May for health reasons. Building mayor Tilo Lindner held the office until the new election.

Since August 2008, she has been explaining local political projects and decisions at least once a month in her video podcast on the city of Riesa website .

In Riesa, Töpfer is particularly active in the fight against right-wing extremism . She was one of the first signatories of the so-called "Riesa Appeal", a local action plan for democracy , tolerance and against xenophobia sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth . In the spring of 2010, she suggested that Mannheimer Strasse, where the NPD publishing house Deutsche Voice is located, be renamed Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse . The city council approved the proposal. On the occasion of the renaming, which is being accompanied by various research projects, Töpfer explained that the initiative was "not a political one-off", but that the associated "positioning of the city of Riesa" against the right "should make it very clear."

In May 2014, Töpfer resigned from her position for health reasons. She suffers from a chronic disease of the spine .
