history

The company was founded in 1958. Its founders and leaders included Lillian Barylli-Fayer , Gerhard Bronner , Friedrich Cerha , Rosalia Chladek , Iván Eröd , Karl Heinz Füssl , Karl Garzarolli-Turnlackh, Josef Gielen , Michael Gielen , Lisl Hatina, Josef Mertin , Federik Mirdita , Josef Pechotsch , Peter Ronnefeld , Hans Sittner , Rudolf Thomasberger, Herbert Vogg, Friedrich Wildgans , Otto M. Zykan and the presidents Karl Schiske (until 1965) and Franz Eugen Dostal (since 1965),

After the major Viennese opera houses were mainly devoted to the classical-romantic repertoire , the initiators of the Society for Music Theater wanted to perform primarily baroque and contemporary works of music theater. Initially, productions took place in Belvedere Park (including Dafne by Antonio Caldara ) and in the Neues Theater am Kärntnertor ( Georg Philipp Telemann's Pimpinone and the world premieres of early operas by Iván Eröd, Ingomar Grünauer and Istvàn Zelenka ).

There were also guest performances at the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck and the Stadttheater Klagenfurt . From 1977 to 1993 there was the SPECTACVLVM festival in the district of the Old Vienna University . Marjana Lipovšek made her debut in "Il lutto dell'universo" by Emperor Leopold I , and premieres of contemporary church ballets were also given.

Cooperations in the exhibition area came about with the Vienna Künstlerhaus and the Theater Museum of La Scala in Milan .

Today, the company primarily organizes concerts, lectures, artist talks, audio and video performances of operas and ballets in the concert hall of the Palais Khevenhüller-Metsch in Vienna .
