The Society for Thermal Analysis eV (GEFTA) is a non-profit scientific society based in Darmstadt . It was founded in 1974 and today has around 300 personal, student, corporate and institute members. Most of the members come from Germany, but also from Austria and Switzerland.

profile

The company is supposed to maintain and improve the exchange of experience and information between experts who work in the field of thermal analysis and calorimetry in the German-speaking region . On the occasion of regularly held conferences, such as the GEFTA annual conference, the Ulm-Freiberger calorimetry days and the Lähnwitz seminar, members and guests report on their activities and work in the areas mentioned. Details are discussed, new questions raised and contacts made.

GEFTA recognizes outstanding achievements in the fields of thermal analysis and calorimetry with the GEFTA Science Award, the NETZSCH-GEFTA Award, NETZSCH-GEFTA Advancement Award (for younger scientists) and the TA Instruments Industry Research Award. The prizes are awarded on the occasion of national or international conferences.

Another concern of GEFTA is the cooperation with other national companies in Europe and an appropriate cooperation in an international framework.

Current working groups

  • Polymers
  • DSC calibration
  • Thermophysics

The results are available to members in various forms (publications, etc.).

All members are informed about current club affairs and news as well as links on the topics of "thermal analysis" and "calorimetry" via this gefta.org website (partly in the protected member area).

The association regularly conducts advanced training courses, both introductory events and for specific applications. With these courses, GEFTA provides those working in this field with manufacturer-independent and metrologically well-founded assistance in dealing with the relevant methods.

Conference series

Annual meetings

Annual conferences on all topics and applications of thermal analysis and calorimetry. The conference venues and organizers change. There are also binational or trinational meetings with foreign societies (e.g. 2012 with the Swiss Society for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (STK) in Saarbrücken, 2010 with the Polish Thermoanalysis Society (PTKAT) and the Czech Working Group for Thermal Analysis (CWGTA) in Dresden, 2008 with the French Thermoanalysis Society ( AFCAT ) and the Swiss Society for Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry (STK) in Mulhouse, 2005 with the Dutch Thermoanalysis Society ( TAWN ) in Rejswijk) and thematic conferences with other German scientific societies (e.g. 2007 with the technical group of the Society of German Food Technologists (GDL) on the subject of Food Engineering Topics in Bremerhaven ).

Lähnwitz seminar

The Lähnwitz Seminar is an international conference that takes place every two years in Rostock on innovative topics in calorimetry :

  • 1996 "Temperature Modulated Calorimetry"
  • 1998 "Investigation of Phase Transitions by Temperature Modulated Calorimetry"
  • 2000 "Frequency and Time Dependent Heat Capacity"
  • 2002 "Thermodynamics and Calorimetry of Small Systems"
  • 2006 "Transitions far from Equilibrium - Super-heating; Super-cooling"
  • 2008 "Calorimetry on a Nano-scale"
  • 2010/2012/2014/2016/2018 "Interplay between Nucleation, Crystallization, and the Glass Transition"

The conference is organized by the Working Group Polymer Physics of the Institute of Physics at the University of Rostock under the direction of Christoph Schick (University of Rostock) and Günther WH Höhne ( Technical University of Eindhoven ). The Lähnwitz seminars have been held since 1990.

Calorimetry days

This conference series, which takes place every two years, focuses on all contributions to applied calorimetry. This conference series looks back on almost 40 years of history. The first event took place in 1975 as the Ulm Calorimetry Days at the Section for Calorimetry at the University of Ulm on the initiative of Günther WH Höhne (Technical University of Eindhoven) and Wolfgang Hemminger (formerly the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB)). In 1995 the venue changed with the 11th conference from Ulm to Freiberg at the Institute for Physical Chemistry of the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and was continued there until the 20th conference in 2013 by Gert Wolf as Ulm-Freiberg Calorimetry Days. With the 21st conference, the venue again changed to the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig .

Annual meetings of the Thermophysics working group

The annual meetings of the working group Thermophysics, which take place every year at different locations, serve to exchange experiences on thermophysical issues such as B. the development and optimization of new measurement methods in modern materials science , the identification of suitable reference materials or the evaluation of round robin tests.

Working groups

Thermophysics working group

This working group is concerned with the study of special thermophysical problems with the focus measuring thermophysical properties such as specific heat , thermal diffusivity , thermal conductivity , thermal expansion and radiation properties (emissivity). The main activities are professional discussions and the exchange of experiences, the organization and implementation of interlaboratory comparisons for the critical comparison of measurement methods, the agreement of cooperations and joint projects and the certification of reference materials.

Polymers Working Group

This working group deals with special problems of thermal analysis on polymer systems. The main focus of the work is the determination of characteristic parameters using methods of thermal analysis, performing interlaboratory comparisons on polymer systems, the selection of polymer-based reference materials for thermal analysis and the investigation of thermal-analytical issues with the help of coupled methods.

DSC calibration working group

This working group dealt with the creation of manufacturer and device-independent calibration methods for dynamic differential calorimetry (DSC). The temperature, the amount of heat and the heat flow in the heating or cooling mode were seen as calibration parameters. The results of the work were published in the form of a large number of articles in scientific journals and presented at specialist conferences.
