The Society of the Star was a noble society founded on August 23, 1370 in Freiburg im Breisgau .

history

Emergence

The aristocratic society “von dem Stern”, also known as “vom Sternen”, was founded on August 23, 1370 in Freiburg im Breisgau as a friendship treaty between the nobles of the city of Freiburg and Messrs. Albrecht and Leopold von Habsburg , probably based on the Schnewlin family . It is not clear whether only nobles or representatives of the individual guilds were admitted as members. The vast majority of the founding members can, however, clearly be assigned to the Freiburg aristocratic circles, which suggests that this is an acceptance criterion. The five captains Hesse Snewli im Hofe, the mayor of Freiburg Cuonrat Snewli, the knight Cuonrat Meinwart, Johans Meigernieß the elter and Heinrich von Kilchein the iunger were elected as board members. In addition to the five captains, the union was sealed by Diethrich Snewlins in the courtyard, by Heinrich Turners , by Heinrichs von Munzingen, by Cuonrat Snewlins Bernlapen, by Peterman Snewlins, by Johans Ruofen of Wiswilr, by Hug Tröschen, by Ruodolf Statzen rittere, by Cuonrat Gebens and Peters from Fürstenberg .

impact

It should be noted that not all of Freiburg's noble families joined this union. Important Freiburg aristocratic families such as the Counts of Freiburg , the Margraves of Hachberg , the Malterer , the Falkenstein , the Küchlin , the Keppenbach etc. seem to have been split up in the Freiburg aristocratic society one part placed closely on the side of the city of Freiburg and the other part leaned on the count houses of Freiburg and Hachberg. It gives the impression that this separation even permeated families. In the example of the Freiburg noble family giving, the subsidiary lines of giving-mint master, Baner-giving, giving-Schüser and Müller-giving are not found, but the subsidiary lines Bla-giving, giving-Sigstein and von Hagenau are among the members of the society from Stars.

Motivations

It seems that the establishment of the Stern Society was a reaction to a covenant made by Count Egino von Freiburg on June 28, 1367 , which was obviously directed against the city of Freiburg. During the war between the city of Freiburg and Count Egino von Freiburg, the count's helpers formed a union at his instigation. These included the Margrave Otto von Hachberg , Heinrich von Geroltseck -Tübingen, Heinrich von Geroltseck-Lahr, the brothers Johann and Hesse von Uesenberg , Martin Malterer and Johann von Schwarzenberg . The actual covenant, however, must have consisted of more members, as is evident from the atonement of March 30, 1368. The nobleman Hanmann von Weissweil, Ulrich Walther, Otto and Gottfried von Staufen , Count Simon von Thierstein and Walther von der Dicke are named as allies of the Count of Freiburg .

List of founding members

A total of 62 members were accepted when it was founded. The list of founding members is in alphabetical order to get a better overview of the individual families. Since the ranking of the nominations in documents from this time also gives an insight into the estate order, the order is given in the first column.
