Martin Malterer († July 9, 1386 ) was a knight from Freiburg im Breisgau .

Family background

Martin Malterer came from the rich Freiburg patrician family Malterer . His father Johannes Malterer was the founder of the painter carpet , which is now in the Augustinian Museum. Johann von Liebegg vouched for this before the Council of Lucerne in 1336 . His mother Gisela von Kaysersberg († December 22, 1381) came from the Snewelin family on his mother's side . In 1354 his father Johannes bought the rule of Kastelburg for 2140 pieces of silver , which was later transferred to his son Martin.

Life

Martin Malterer lived in the Kastelburg above Waldkirch , where he also made renovations, and was married to Anna von Thierstein , the daughter of Count Walram von Thierstein . With her he had four daughters, who would later inherit shares in the Riegel community , but no son. He belonged to the Society with the Lion , a noble society founded on October 17, 1379 .

From 1356 to 1386 a number of Baden-Hachberg villages were pledged to Martin Malterer, such as Emmendingen with the stronghold and the Mußbach, Glashausen, Reichenbach, Nordprechtsberg, Bildstein, Altkeppenbach, Gerlisberg and Hofen, which are now part of Freiamt . He also owned Kenzingen and the Kirnburg in 1381 as a pledge.

In 1377 Malterer entered the service of Leopold III. of Habsburg . This enabled him to largely free the rule of Kastelburg from Austrian burdens and duties. In 1379 he became bailiff in Breisgau , Sundgau and Alsace .

Death and aftermath

In 1386, Malterer moved as the personal protector of the Habsburg Archduke Leopold III. and standard bearer of the Freiburg in the direction of Sempach in the Swiss Confederation . In the Battle of Sempach, the Confederates defeated the Habsburgs on July 9, which ultimately led to their independence from the House of Habsburg.

The Freiburg knighthood and the nobility paid a huge toll in blood, Malterers and more than 40 fighters did not return. According to tradition, Malterer was found lying over the body of the young archduke.

In 1386/1387 the Malter family lost the Kastelburg as there were no male heirs of Malterer. The castle was the subject of adventurous awards and pledges by the Habsburgs.

On the Schwabentor Bridge in Freiburg, a statue by the sculptor Julius Seitz commemorates Martin Malterer. In the stained glass painting of the Battle of Sempach by Fritz Geiges in the Friedrich-Gymnasium in Freiburg, which was destroyed in 1945 , Malterer was staged as a model for virtue and loyalty to the ruling house.
