content

The two young men Ban Midou and Ginji Amano live in Shinjuku and form the Get Backers . Their motto is "We bring back what has been taken from them!". They accept orders on a fee basis to get lost objects or people back. They are often embroiled in adventures when the jobs turn out to be more dangerous than initially assumed. However, since the two are constantly in need of money, they are forced to accept everyone. Even if they almost always do their job, Ban and Ginji always remain poor due to unfortunate circumstances. Often they are given new jobs by the young Hevn .

Characters

Get backers

  • Ban Mido
Together with Ginji Amano he forms the Get Backers group . Little is known about his past, but there is some evidence that he came from a wealthy family. He is a talented violin player and very interested in art. He has the abilities of the devilish eye , with which he can force a dream on people and animals with eye contact for a minute. However, he can use it a maximum of 3 times a day and not twice on a person within 24 hours. Furthermore, his handle, which he calls "Snake Bite", has a pressure of 200 kg. He is very good at recognizing what others are thinking and sees through almost every farce. He has a very childish and playful demeanor, even when he is fighting. He is still often called a genius when it comes to fighting. He has no talent with money and always prefers the pigeon on the roof to the sparrow in hand and is therefore usually broke and homeless.
  • Ginji Amano
Together with Ban Mido he pictures the group Get Backers . He was abandoned as a child in Fortress Without Borders and raised there by Teshinime. He was the leader of the Volts and was called the " Elektro King Ginji Amano " and was feared as such. However, he left the Volts and the fortress without borders , making many old comrades into enemies. Like an electric eel, he has the ability to generate electricity in his body, which he knows how to use in various ways in combat. He is also a talented fighter, but is always in Ban’s shadow. Because of Ban's risky way of dealing with money, he is always broke and homeless.
The Get Backers "company car"

The Get Backers' "company car" is a souped-up Subaru 360 .

Volts

The 4 kings of the Volts

  • Kazuki Fuchoin ( Stringmaster Kazuki )
Kazuki Fuchoin was one of the 4-Kings of the Volts . He came along with his childhood friend Jubei Kakei into the fortress without borders after his family was killed. He got the title Stringmaster (German name Schnur-Meister) because his weapon is Koto strings. This type of fight had a long history in his family. He has a very feminine appearance and Rando Ayamine always counts him among the female characters outside of the story. Shortly after Ginji he leaves the fortress without borders .
  • Shido Fuyuki ( Beastmaster )
Shido was one of the 4-Kings of the Volts . He is descended from the ancient Maryudo people, who are considered extinct. Through this ancestry, he has the ability to talk to animals and control them and even to some extent accept their abilities. Since he uses these skills in combat, he was nicknamed "Beastmaster". He came alone to the fortress without borders and left it shortly after Ginji in the hope of being able to bring it back. He later lives with Madoka Otawa .
  • Makubex / Macbex
Macbex was one of the 4-Kings of the Volts . He grew up in the fortress without borders. He was found in a bag with only the name "Makube" on it. Nobody knows his last name, including himself. He was raised by Gen the medicine maker and soon discovers his enormous talent in using computers. Because of his extremely high IQ he is nicknamed Makubex / Macbex. He adored Ginji and changed enormously after he left the Fortress Without Borders . He is temporarily the opponent of the Get Backers , because they are supposed to get the " IL / Lens " - the data sequence for detonating an atomic bomb - back from him. But Ginji convinces him that there are other ways. He turns out to be a tough opponent because his calculations are very accurate and he is a master of probability and computer science. Physically he is not strong and therefore does not fight himself. He wants to free the Lower Town from the rule of Babylon City and thus founds the new Volts.
  • Kurusu Masaki
Masaki was one of the 4-Kings of the Volts . He was a role model for Ginji . It is later revealed that he is one of the " gods of the fortress without borders ". In combat he uses an illusionary light to blind and confuse the opponent. He leaves the fortress without borders before Ginji .

Other members of the Volts

  • Jubei Kakei ( Flying-Needle Jubei )
Jubei is a childhood friend of Kazuki and came to Fortress Without Borders with him and his group Fuuga . Although he is always under Kazuki , he is equal to him in battle. In combat, he uses needles to fatally injure his opponent. Actually, it is the needles of an ancient healing art that is taught in the Kakei family , who have been the general practitioners of the Fuchoin family for generations . Later he always worked for Macbex and was loyal to him. He is the younger brother of Sakura Kakei
  • Sakura Kakei
Sakura is Jubei's older sister . She is always with Macbex and, like her brother, very loyal to him. She fights with scarves, but is nowhere near as strong as her brother.
  • Haruki Emishi ( Bloodbath Joker )
Emishi is a descendant of the Old Roran tribe, most of which are considered destroyed. He considers himself a comedian and likes to make jokes and grimaces, which Shido , who was his direct "superior" at the Volts , often got on his nerves. As a weapon he uses the Roran whip, which was made from the hair of the women of the former Roran tribe and is therefore extremely elastic. Because he laughs so much but is extremely strong in battle, he has been called the "Man Who Laughs In Blood" and "Bloodbath Joker". Children only call him "the stupid Emishi" . Since he never takes the appropriate seriousness for the situation, he almost never fights with his real potential, but can keep up with the 4-Kings if he has the right motivation. He also joins Macbex.

Supporting characters

  • Natsumi Mizuki
Natsumi works in the Get Backers Honky Tonk pub . She is a very lively and loving girl and very naive. She is also gifted with craftsmanship. In the anime, she is the Get Backers' first client .
  • Hevn
Hevn is an alias or stage name, the real name is never mentioned. She works as a contract broker and is best known for doing particularly dangerous jobs, which is why Ginji and Ban don't always like to see her. She has a sexy body, which she often uses as an "argument" to convince Ban , and always dresses as tightly as possible.
  • Madoka Otawa
She is a blind violinist who is world famous for her good playing and hearing. She is always polite and nice, but seems quite naive. She is a client of the Get Backers , who are supposed to get her violin, a Stradivarius , back for her . Since she has to be present when the job is carried out, she meets Shido and falls in love with him. He later moves in with Madoka.
  • Paul Wang
Paul is the owner of the Honky Tonk . He looks inconspicuous, but has been in Hinter-Shinjuku for a long time and knows the place like the back of his hand. He is extremely effective at obtaining information, even if it is secret or very protected. Why he appreciates the Get Backers so much and cares about them is not known, as they owe him a large sum (for coffee and sushi). He's very talented with computers. Apart from the Get Backers' clients, there are hardly any guests in his café, which suggests that he is doing other business through his black market contacts.
  • Himiko Kudo ( Lady Poison )
Himiko first worked in a group called the Transporter . Along with Goso Magurama and Akabane Kurodo , she is one of the most famous transporters. She used to work together with her brother Yamato Kudo and Ban as a recovery company. She believes that Ban killed her brother, so she wants revenge on him. She appears for the first time when Ban and Ginji are supposed to retrieve a box to transport. Ban convinces her that the death of her brother is the fate of a voodoo child and appeases her for the time being. Himiko is also a voodoo child (the manga only mentions that a curse hits a person who kills a voodoo child ). As a weapon she uses different perfumes, which have different effects. It can burn people, erase their memories, and even reset their minds to primate levels. This gave her the name "Lady Poison" and "The witch with the 7 poison perfumes" (it is called 7 poison perfumes, but she always carries at least 9 with her, but supposedly has hundreds of different ones.)
  • Yamato Kudo
Yamato is Himiko's older brother. He fled her home with her when she was a small child and has always protected her ever since. Like Himiko, he also worked with the poison perfumes. He was killed by Ban . Little is known about the reasons, but they are linked to the fate of the voodoo children .
  • Kurodo Akabane ( Dr. Jackal )
Is one of the transporters . He is always polite and always calm, but extremely cruel in combat and takes pleasure in killing people. He always carries a multitude of scalpels with him, which he hides in his body. If his statements are to be believed, everything that comes into contact with his blood becomes his weapon, which he can always freely use. He's a tough opponent of the Get Backers and maybe not the strongest, but the most dangerous character in the manga. Ginji pulls all scalpels out of his body with his magnet power, whereby Akabane should have been killed.
In Fortress Without Borders, 'Ginji' arouses his interest by becoming his alter ego, the Elektroking - since then Akabane (or Dr. Jackal, as he is commonly called) is looking forward to a duel, but 'Ban' also seems to him to irritate, because in the course of the story, the two fight a bitter fight on 'Battleship Island'. His greed for the blood of stronger opponents has a great influence on his psyche, in order to satisfy them he will stop at nothing. When 'Hevn' hires him with the Get Backers to get the IL back, he betrays his comrades by giving MacBex the key to completing his plan: weapons-grade plutonium. He himself does not see this as treason as he has never been loyal. But he still helps to get the IL back.
  • Goso Magurama ( Mr. Nobreak )
Magurama is a transporter . He often works with Akabane and Himiko . In contrast to the two, however, he is not a fighter, but an excellent driver, which is why he is called "MR. Nobreak". He rarely appears and little is known about him other than that he also drives a taxi.
  • Ryudo Hishiki ( Undead )
Hishiki is a bodyguard or protector who is nicknamed Undead because he hardly minds an attack. He also has a very strong punch, but his muscle mass makes him slow. All that is known about his past is that he was once with Ultimate Fighting, but at one point he went nuts and killed his opponents, which resulted in his being fired. He is (presumably) killed by Ginji by directing lightning into Hishiki's body.
  • Takuma Fudō ( The Seer )
Fudo lost his right arm in a past fight with Ban . To get revenge on him he joins Macbex , who equips him with a machine hand. He has a special ability that allows him to look a few seconds into the future and foresee what the opponent will do next. This gave him the nickname "seer". Because he is so fixated on his revenge on Ban , he seems very rash and stubborn. He is outwitted and killed by Shido .
  • Kyōji Kagami
Kagami is a resident of the tower, which means he comes from Babylon City, the uppermost part of the fortress without borders . He calls himself an observer, but was strong enough to survive a fight with Akabane. His weapons are broken glass and mirrors. His best weapon is the "Diamond Dust", which initially creates a lot of reflections from him, but is intended to cut the opponent from the inside out when he inhales it.
  • The seven mirokus
While Ban and Mido are supposed to regain the lost arms of Venus de Milo, it is the job of the seven Mirokus to prevent the two. Natsuhiko Miroku, one of the seven, is an old friend of Ban and is determined to kill him - but the other Mirokus are also dangerous. During this mission, Ginji befriends the youngest of the Mirokus, namely Yukihiko, and is later involved in a fight in which he single-handedly defeats all seven siblings. Although the seven Mirokus are seven people who couldn't be more different, they share one body - not, say, split personalities, but actually seven people in one.
  • Clayman
Clayman is a woman who specializes in art theft. According to its own statement, it operates "the eternal replacement". She wants to secure or preserve priceless works of art for posterity. Her mother was a medium for the ghosts of dead artists who continued to paint by hand. She hires the Get Backers to bring Venus' arms back from Milo.

Important places and groups

  • Volts
The Volts were a youth gang in which there was a hierarchy . The undisputed founder of the Volts was Ginji Amano , who got the name Elektro-King because of his skills and strength . Under Ginji stood the "4 Kings" - Kazuki Fuchoin the string master, Fuyuki Shido the beastmaster, Makubex (German name Macbex) and Kurusu Masaki.
The Volts ruled primarily over the fortress without borders and disintegrated after leaving Ginji. In the "Lower Town" this led to attacks from the "Beltline". After "Operation IL" Macbex founds the new Volts.
  • Manji brothers
Not much is known about the Manji brothers in the volumes published in Germany so far. Occasionally they run into the Get Backers during their assignments, but they never pose a particularly great threat to them. Their appearance is characterized by a bald head and night vision device that all members wear. They dress like right-wing extremists, but the swastikas have been retouched in German publications. So far, four teams from the Manji organization have appeared in the manga.
  • Fortress without borders
A huge building complex in back Shinjuku where the law does not matter. The police and the yakuza also avoid the area, which is ruled exclusively by youth gangs. Although about 10,000 people live there, it is struck off the maps. The core of the complex is the "Babylon Tower", in the foundation of which there is a device for generating virtual reality. Most of the complex was created through illegal construction during a major economic recession. Ban later realizes that Fortress Without Borders is a place where radio waves have been used to create a world that vacillates between illusion and reality. The supernatural abilities and the ability to heal under the influence of this force field are also much more pronounced for all inmates. The fortress is divided into three levels. The first part "Lower Town" (1st – 20th floor - risk potential: 30–45%), which Ginji ruled at the time of the Elektroking. Then comes the "Belt Line" (21st – 40th floor - risk potential: 75%), about which little is known. Kazuki entered it once, but didn't get far before he had to retreat, seriously injured. The top level is "Babylon City" (from the 41st floor - hazard potential: ∝) which is known only to the fact that the heads who stage the illusion of the fortress without borders , the "gods of the fortress", should live there.
  • Honky Tonk
Honky Tonk is Paul's café . It often functions as the office of the Get Backers , as they are homeless and can only meet their customers there. The café, which is kept in the European style, is inconspicuous, but has some high-performance computers and servers. The Get Backers have an enormous bill open at Honky Tonk, which has temporarily increased to almost ¥ 800,000.
  • Battleship Island
Battleship Island serves as the Yakuza's secret base of operations in Act 7. The Get Backers thwart an auction there with illegally obtained antiques and drug trafficking. The island actually exists and is actually called Hashima .
  • IL
The abbreviation IL stands for "Implosion Lens", the detonator for an atomic bomb. In reality, the IL was not a detonator, but a DVD that contained a nuclear test program from the former Soviet Union. The program was able to simulate nuclear tests and calculate the detonator.

Conception and creation

Every mission or adventure is summarized in one act. The length of the file can vary from a few pages to several volumes. Occasional interludes appear between the files. Nevertheless, a coherent story runs across the board and the protagonists meet again and again, often alternating as opponents or partners. Each chapter is commented on with background information from the draftsman. The place and time of action is present-day Japan, in an environment determined by violence and crime. In the course of the plot, people with supernatural abilities appear increasingly as opponents of the two main characters.

The manga is the first commercial work by Rando Ayamine . Work on it began in 1997. The work was heavily influenced by Japanese horror films, of which the author is a fan.

Publications

Get Backers appeared in Japan from 1999 to 2007 in weekly individual chapters in the manga magazine Shōnen Magazine , in which Hiro Mashima's RAVE and Akimine Kamijyo's samurai Deeper Kyo were published at the same time . The Kōdansha publishing house also brought out these individual chapters in 39 edited volumes.

The manga is also being published in North America, Singapore, China, Thailand, Indonesia, France and Germany. Get Backers was first published in German in the Manga Power magazine, chapter by chapter , from August 2003 (issue 17) until the magazine was discontinued in the September 2004 issue. From February 2004 to December 2013, the Egmont Manga & Anime publisher published all volumes in Germany.

Zenin Shūgō! for pc. In 2004 GetBackers Dakkanoku - Urashinshiku Saikyō Battle was released for the PlayStation 2.

reception

In a review by MangasZene magazine , the manga is described as a “tough action series with a lot of humor” that sets itself apart from other works in the genre. The plot offers a mixture of action, eroticism, humor and horror with narratives that are modeled on real everyday life in the Shinjuku district with a high crime rate. The drawings offer a lot of fan service for the male audience as well as two good-looking main characters for the female readers, to whom there are already many Yaoi - Dōjinshi .

The German fanzine Funime describes the anime series as a mixture of Weiß Kreuz and Lupine III . However, after a few episodes, focusing on fighting can bore the viewer. Anime DVD magazine, on the other hand, writes of a "captivating anime that is often unconventional in its nature" . The characters are believable and the special relationship between the two main characters sets the series apart from the usual action series. The interspersed humor is mainly slapstick , but never becomes ridiculous. In its mostly dark plot, the anime mixes cyberpunk - with fantasy elements. Together with the frequent fan service , many bishons and shonen -ai allusions, the result would be a mixture that offers something for everyone.
