The place Ghent is situated on the border between Kentucky and Indiana at the Ohio River north of highway Interstate 71 . On the opposite bank of the Ohio is the city of Vevay, Indiana .
According to the United States Census Bureau , the village covers an area of 1.9 km², excluding land, with no significant water surface.
history
The first European settlers settled here at the end of the 18th century. At that time, this town was initially known as McCool's Creek Settlement . Later the name was officially changed to Ghent, based on the Ghent Peace Treaty , which was signed in the city of Ghent , Belgium , on Christmas Eve 1814 , and which sealed the end of the British-American War . The proposal to rename the place in Ghent came from Henry Clay , who himself belonged to this peace commission and took part in the peace conference in Ghent.
