Giovanni Stefano Ferrero (also: Giovanni Stefano Ferreri or Gianstefano Ferrero ; * May 5, 1474 in Biella , † October 5, 1510 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church and bishop .

Life

Ferrero was born the fifth of Sebastiano Ferrero and Tomena Avogadro's 14 children . His family was allied with the Acciaiuoli in Florence . There were numerous ecclesiastical dignitaries in his family, including his brother Cardinal Bonifacio Ferrero and his uncle Cardinal Pier Francesco Ferrero .

His training took place in Padua , where he studied canon law . After graduation, he became an auditor of the Holy Roman Rota and Apostolic Protonotary . From August 19, 1489 to November 14, 1494 he was the coming abbot of the Benedictine monastery of San Stefano in Ivrea . There followed in 1489 the abbot of S. Salvatore in Casalvolone , on November 5, 1492 abbot of the Benedictine monastery of San Stefano in Vercelli , from 1495 to 1508 the abbot of Santi Graziano e Felino in Arona and until July 16, 1499 the abbot of the monastery of San Martino in Ivrea.

On April 24, 1493, at the instigation of the Duchess Bianca and her son Carlo Giovanni Amadeo , Duke of Savoy , he was appointed coadjutor with the right of succession in the Diocese of Vercelli . On July 16, 1499 he was appointed Bishop of Vercelli. The episcopal ordination took place on January 21, 1502 and he kept this office until January 21, 1502. On October 31, 1503, he received the bishopric again and was replaced on November 5, 1509 by his brother Bonifazio.

Pope Alexander VI elevated him in the consistory of September 28, 1500 to the rank of cardinal in pectore . The publication took place in the consistory of June 28, 1502 and on June 28, 1502 he received the cardinal's hat and as a cardinal priest the titular church of San Vitale . On January 24, 1502 he was transferred to the bishopric of Bologna , which he held until his death.

Ferrero participated in the conclave of September 1503 , which Pope Pius III. elected, and at the conclave of October 1503 that Pope Julius II elected. On December 22nd, 1505, he decided on the cardinal diakonia pro illa vice of Santi Sergio e Bacco . From January 1506 to 1507 he was Camerlengo of the College of Cardinals .

Ferrero died in Rome on October 5, 1510 and was buried in the Basilica of San Clemente in Rome. Later his remains were transferred to Biella and buried there in the church of San Sebastiano.
