Gilles Mbang Ondo (born October 10, 1985 in Libreville ) is a Gabonese - French football player . He is currently under contract with UMF Selfoss in Iceland .

Club career

The son of an Ivorian and a French woman grew up in Gabon before the family moved to France in the mid-1990s. There he joined the youth department of Paris Saint-Germain in 1999 , where he was trained until 2004. In his last two years at PSG he scored 39 goals, after which he was poached by AJ Auxerre .

In Auxerre he was also used in the youth department for the time being, before he was accepted into the B-squad of Auxerre after 32 goals in the 2005/06 season. This was followed by an impressive rate of 44 missions with 39 goals for the B team. Only during a short loan period from French fifth division club Feignies SC did he disappoint across the board. Against the expectations of the club, Mbang, who acted as a great striker talent, could not prevail and only played 7 games with a goal. After his return to Auxerre, the club then decided to let the player go free of charge for lack of prospect of a breakthrough as a professional player, despite his extraordinary quota. Club legend Guy Roux had previously personally observed him several times.

Through the mediation of his advisor, he signed with the then Austrian regional league team SC Eisenstadt in July 2007 . Mbang was largely able to convince with good performances at the financially stricken club, but the team was not put together adequately due to the financial situation, which meant that the club was last in the table with only 5 points during the winter break. When the club finally had to file for bankruptcy for the second half of the season, the contracts with the few service providers, including Mbang, were dissolved.

As a result, he was without a club until March 2008, when he came to the Icelandic first division club UMF Grindavík . The commitment turned out to be a stroke of luck for the club and the players. Mbang hit the relegation-threatened club straight away and brought the team with strong performances in the midfield of the league. In the following season he improved again and achieved 4th place in the league's top scorer with 11 goals in 21 season appearances. He was also voted the best striker of the 2009 season.

His performances did not go unnoticed, especially in the stronger Nordic leagues, which brought him to various clubs from Norway, Sweden and Denmark after the end of the 2009 season. A move to GAIS Göteborg failed, however, due to the transfer ideas from Grindavík. Furthermore, the change to the Greek first division club Skoda Xanthi , which had already been announced as fixed, failed .

National team

Due to the nationality of his father and mother, Mbang would theoretically have been eligible to play for the Ivory Coast or France . During his time at Auxerre, the Ivory Coast started an inquiry at the same time as his country of birth Gabon, whereupon he decided on Gabon.

In 2006 he was called up to the U-23 national team of Gabon, for which he played a total of 3 official and 4 unofficial internationals. Among other things, he scored an important goal in the 2-0 win against Cameroon in qualifying for the Pan-African Games .

He played his first game for the national team of Gabon in February 2008 against the national team of Madagascar . Since then he has been used by coach Alain Giresse in the qualification for the 2010 African Cup, which Gabon survived. The qualification for the Soccer World Cup 2010 was just missed as group runner-up behind Cameroon .
