Light novel

A series of light novels based on the manga Gin Tama appears in Jump Square magazine under the title 3-nen Z-gumi Gimpachi-sensei .

Success and reception

The anthologies of the manga reached the top 20 of the best-selling manga volumes in Japan several times. Volume 28 has sold over 400,000 times in Japan.

According to Irene Salzmann from Splashcomics, the manga is very reminiscent of Rurouni Kenshin , but Gin Tama puts the Meiji period in a science fiction environment and thus parodies it. However, the plot does not offer any further development of the characters or background stories, but rather action and slapstick. The series is more recommended to boys than girls ( Shōnen ). The drawings are "rich in detail and dynamic" and sometimes use is made of the super-deformed style.
