Gion Stump & the Lighthouse Project is a Swiss band from St. Gallen , consisting of Gion Stump (vocals, guitar), Claudio Weder (piano, synthesizer), Reto Stump (drums), Orlando De Toffol (guitar) and Samuel Näf (bass , Violin).

history

Gion Stump (* 1991) founded the band in 2006 together with his brother Reto Stump (* 1989), Claudio Weder (* 1991) and Orlando De Toffol (* 1989). After several changes, Samuel Näf (* 1995) joined the band in 2011.

In 2010 the band released their debut album Fine Lines at Dawn , which received critical acclaim. The album was mastered by Andy "Hippy" Baldwin ( Arcade Fire , Coldplay ) at the Metropolis Studios in London . Afterwards the band toured Switzerland as a trio; the following tour through Germany had to be canceled for health reasons.

In 2012, the second album, Lost in Limbo , was released through Nation Music . The band themselves described the album as "more complex and darker than its predecessor". Lost in Limbo was mastered by Ian Cooper ( David Bowie , Phil Collins , Peter Gabriel ).

Shortly after the release of Lost in Limbo, Gion Stump recorded the first solo album Rail Tracks in Nuremberg. It was produced by Massy Collu. The single No Control was played on BBC , among others . Three more songs were produced by the Swiss drummer Beat Fraefel-Haering, who won the Swiss Jazz Award with his band in 2011 . The album was released on the German label Timezone . The “Rail Tracks Tour” included concerts in England, Holland, Belgium, Germany, France and Switzerland. Among other things, he played in the Montreux Jazz Café in Harrods in London.

In November 2013 the band played concerts with the symphony orchestra Camerata Salonistica in the Tonhallen St.Gallen and Wil. For these concerts Gion Stump wrote a new project called War Poems , which consisted of soldiers' poems set to music . In the second part, rearranged versions of the band's songs were played.

In 2014 the band played at various festivals in Switzerland, including the SummerDays Festival in Arbon . In 2015 the band took part in the forest stage contest of the Gurtenfestival in Bern and thus earned a performance at the festival.

At the end of April 2017, the band's third album called "Holy Darkness" was released. The single "Seven Seas" was released in advance on March 3, 2017 and was accompanied by a music video by director Sandro Horber, which won the recognition award at the Eastern Switzerland Short Film Competition. The album was produced by drummer Orlando Ribar in Switzerland and the USA, where the string arrangements by Dave Eggar and Donnie Reis were recorded. The album was mixed by Peter Schmidt (Tonmeister) ( Depeche Mode , kraftklub ) in the Ballsaal Studios Berlin and at Sterling Sound in New York by multiple Grammy winner Tom Coyne ( Beyoncé , Adele ), who passed away before it was released . According to the band's own statements, the album is inspired by current world events and darkness. In addition to the strings and the band, a children's choir can be heard on several songs on the album.

In 2019, the band's new single, Who We Are , followed, which was recorded and produced by Fredrik Thomander in Spain with the Swiss producer Rico Horber ( Stoneman , Anna Lux ) in the Palma Music Studios . In 2020 the band played a few concerts with a symphony orchestra again as part of the anniversary of the Camerata Salonistica Orchestra. Due to the Corona crisis, several concerts of the Darkness Visible Tour in Switzerland, Germany and Holland either had to be postponed or canceled entirely in spring and summer 2020 . As part of the canceled concerts, the band released a live acoustic version of the song The Ship , which was recorded at a concert in the band's home village, Engelburg.
