Peter Schmidt (sound engineer)

Peter Schmidt (* before 1985) is a German sound engineer who from the late 1980s worked mainly in Hamburg and helped shape the sound of the Hamburg School . He has also been working under the pseudonym BlackPete since 1999 and has been running a studio in Berlin since 2005 for mixing music mainly from German artists.

He worked for a number of well-known national and international artists. Many of the albums he mixed received positive criticism in the German music press and were commercially successful.

Life

Peter Schmidt started his career in 1985 in the EMI Studios in Cologne as an intern. There he took part in productions by Herbert Grönemeyer , Klaus Lage and Wolf Maahn , among others . In May 1985 he moved to the Berlin Hansa recording studios and assisted a. a. Parts of the Depeche Mode album Black Celebration . The contact with the band under contract with Mute led to work for Diamanda Galás and the Inspiral Carpets . In 1989 he became self-employed and began his career in the recording studio Chateau Du Pape in Hamburg, where he met the producer Franz Plasa. In the following years he was responsible for album productions by Franz Plasa and Chris von Rautenkranz for The Jeremy Days , Selig , Echt , Bernd Begemann and Blumfeld . After the Jeremy Days split, Peter Schmidt worked in the environment of Dirk Darmstaedter for his label Mural Records with Niels Frevert , Bernd Begemann and Tele . After the dissolution of Selig then in the environment of Christian Neander , Kungfu , Pohlmann and Michel van Dyke . Schmidt continued to mix Plasa productions for Keimzeit , Udo Lindenberg and Heinz Rudolf Kunze and worked for BAP , Klee and Phillip Boa .

Since 1999 he has often appeared under the pseudonym BlackPete, primarily as a mixer, initially in Franz Plasa's HOME studios in Hamburg, and later as a sound engineer and mixer for Andreas Herbig, who also produces under the pseudonym Boogieman. In addition to Reamonn , he also worked for Beatsteaks , Rosenstolz , Peter Maffay , Katharina Franck , Keimzeit , Etta Scollo and Peter Fox .

Schmidt (BlackPete) has been running the ballroom studios in the Berlin district of Lichterfelde since 2005 , where he and his assistants a. a. also mixes artists who record in the neighboring Teldex Studios. Teldex has been operating the traditional Teldec Studios since 2003. Schmidt also coordinates the mastering for Germany, Austria and Switzerland at the renowned Sterling Sound Mastering Studio in New York City .
