Giorgio Ronconi (born August 6, 1810 in Milan ; † January 8, 1890 there ) was an Italian opera singer ( baritone ) and vocal teacher.

Life

Ronconi received singing lessons from his father Domenico , who was himself an important tenor . In 1831 he made his debut in Pavia as Valleburgo in Vincenzo Bellini's La straniera . Engagements at La Scala in Milan and other major houses in Italy soon followed . In the following years he was involved in seven world premieres of Gaetano Donizetti's operas :

In 1842 he created the title role in Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco at La Scala in Milan. In 1842 he sang for the first time at Her Majesty's Theater in London (Henry Ashton in Lucia di Lammermoor ). From 1847 to 1866 he appeared at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden , in 1840 and 1843/44 he was in Vienna , 1850-1860 in St. Petersburg and 1866-1877 in New York City . Internationally, Ronconi hurried from success to success until his resignation in 1870.

He didn't have a great voice, but he was able to compensate for his vocal deficiencies with a great stage presence and acting. His star roles, the title role in Verdi's Rigoletto and Figaro in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia , show the breadth of his skills. In 1837 he married the soprano Elguerra Giannoni in Naples . In his later years he founded a singing school in Granada and received a professorship at the Madrid Conservatory .
