Giovanni Cardinal Saldarini (born December 11, 1924 in Cantù , Province of Como , † April 18, 2011 in Milan ) was Archbishop of Turin and Cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Giovanni Saldarini, the eldest of three children, studied Catholic theology after leaving school and received the sacrament of priestly ordination through Alfredo Ildefonso Cardinal Schuster OSB in Milan Cathedral on May 31, 1947 . After further studies, he was awarded licentiates in the subjects of Catholic theology and Biblical exegesis . In the years 1952 to 1967 he taught Biblical Theology at the Seminary of Venegono . From 1967 he worked as a parish priest in Milan. Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness on April 24, 1979 .

In June 1983 he was appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Milan by Carlo Maria Cardinal Martini SJ .

On November 10, 1984, John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Gaudiaba and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Milan. The Archbishop of Milan donated him the episcopal ordination on December 7th of the same year. Co- consecrators were his predecessor, Giovanni Umberto Cardinal Colombo , and the Bishop of Bergamo , Giulio Oggioni . On January 31, 1989, he was appointed Archbishop of Turin and in 1990 Papal Commissioner for questions relating to the Shroud of Turin .

John Paul II accepted him on June 28, 1991 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Sacro Cuore di Gesù a Castro Pretorio in the college of cardinals . In 1999, Cardinal Saldarini, due to illness, submitted his resignation from the office of Archbishop of Turin, which John Paul II accepted on June 19 of the same year. He then retired to Milan and died in 2011 in the San Giuseppe clinic there . Cardinal Saldarini was buried in Turin Cathedral .

Act

Giovanni Saldarini was a well-known biblical scholar as a student of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini . He became known for his pastoral work for people suffering from AIDS, drug addicts and illegal immigrants. During a labor dispute at Fiat in 1994, he demonstratively sided with the workers with Michele Cardinal Giordano , Archbishop of Naples, and Carlo Maria Cardinal Martini .
