The 61st Giro della Provincia di Reggio Calabria (also Challenge Calabria ) was an Italian cycle stage race that took place from January 28th to 30th, 2011. It was held in three stages over a total distance of 531.1 kilometers. The race was part of the UCI Europe Tour 2011 , classified there in category 2.1 and the first stage race in Europe in 2011. Originally the race was supposed to take place over five days, but had to be shortened due to financial difficulties.
Overall winner was the Italian Daniele Pietropolli ( lampre-ISD ), who had already won the race in 2008. He relegated the Colombian professional José Serpa from the Italian team Androni Giocattoli and his compatriot Daniel Oss from Liquigas-Cannondale , who became the best young driver, to the places.
Attendees
The organizing ASD Sporting Club 1907 invited the six largest Italian professional teams and three Italian Continental teams , some of which drive under foreign license. There were also four small foreign teams at the start. The only German starter was Stefan Schumacher from Team Miche .

Stages and course of the race
The first stage of the race, which began in Melito di Porto Salvo in the very south of the Italian mainland and ended in a mountain finish leading north, was also the most difficult of the tour. Daniele Pietropolli secured victory in a sprint of a top group of seven and thus laid the foundation for his later overall victory. But also the second section, which crossed the south of Italy from east to west, was provided with some climbs. A large group of drivers made the day's success among themselves, with Oscar Gatto of Farnese Vini-Neri Sottoli unbeatable .
The Giro della Provincia di Reggio Calabria 2011 ended on the third day with a stage that led the field of drivers south to the provincial capital of Reggio Calabria . Topographical difficulties could only be overcome in the first half of the race. In the mass sprint, Sacha Modolo prepared his Colnago-CSF Inox team-mate Manuel Belletti for victory in an exemplary manner in order to finish third himself. Pietropolli ( Lampre-ISD ) defended his narrow lead and won the light blue jersey for the second time in his career.
