Girolamo Campagna
Girolamo Campagna (* 1549 in Verona , † 1625 in Venice ) was a sculptor from northern Italy .
He was the son of a furrier and went to Venice in 1572. He was on friendly terms with the poets Pietro Aretino , Torquato Tasso , Tizian and Vasari .
Works
His teachers were Jacopo Sansovino and Danese Cattaneo. Many of Danese Cattaneo's works were completed by him. So he made the figure of the seated Doge Leonardo Loredan on the funerary monument that Cattaneo erected in Santi Giovanni e Paolo (Venice) . After Cattaneo's death in 1572 Campagna worked in Padua in the Basilica of Saint Anthony according to the order originally directed to Cattaneo and there he made his masterpiece with the relief Miracle of Saint Anthony the Resurrection of a Slain .
A few years later Campagna returned to Padua and made the bronze tabernacle for the sacrament chapel.
He spent most of his life in Venice , where most of his works are located:
- the statues of St Francis and St Clare carrying the ostensorium in Santa Maria dei Miracoli , Venice;
- the statue of St. Justina of Padua above the entrance of the arsenal , in memory of the naval battle of Lepanto , which took place on October 7th, 1571, during Campagna's lifetime, on its name festival;
- the colossal figure of St. Sebastian the Zecca ;
- the reliefs of Mary and the Archangel Gabriel , patron saints of Venice, on the Rialto Bridge ;
- the bronze group Christ on the Globe carried by the Four Evangelists for the main altar and a Madonna for the second altar in the left aisle in San Giorgio Maggiore ;
- Monument to Doge Marcantonio Trevisan in San Francesco della Vigna 1553;
- Statues in San Sebastiano ;
- Statues in the Scuola Grande di San Rocco : St. Roch for the Sala terrena, St. John the Baptist and St. Sebastian for the Sala superiore;
- The metal dome of the altar for the Rosary Chapel of San Zanipolo survived the fire that broke out there.
- Statues of St. Anthony of Padua and Agnes for baptismal font in the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari ;
- He made the terracotta figures in San Zulian
At the end of the sixteenth century he was the most famous sculptor in Venice. He received all the big orders and ran a large workshop.
In Verona there is the Annunciation made by him above the portal of the old Palazzo del Consiglio and a Madonna at the Collegio dei Mercatanti.
Campagna cast bronze sculptures for the first time in 1590.
