Giuseppe D'Annibale, who grew up in modest circumstances, studied theology and philosophy, was in September 1838 Subdeacon and in March 1839 a deacon . He later obtained a doctorate in civil and canon law. He was ordained a priest on September 21, 1839 . He stayed in Borbona until 1850, before becoming professor of moral theology at the seminary in Rieti in 1851 . In 1852 D'Annibale became vicar general of the diocese of Rieti . After the death of Bishop Gaetano Carletti in 1867, he headed the official business as capitular vicar until 1871, before the later Cardinal Egidio Mauri became the new bishop. On his behalf, he wrote a commentary on the Apostolic Constitution Apostolicae sedis moderationi of Pope Pius IX in 1872 . which he published in 1873. He found praise from Cardinal Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci , who later became Pope Leo XIII. In the following years he devoted himself mainly to the renewal of moral theology. His three-volume work Summula theologiae moralis ad usum seminarii Reatini had a decisive influence on the Codex iuris Canonici introduced in 1917 .

Leo XIII. appointed him on August 12, 1881 titular bishop of Carystus . He received the episcopal ordination two days later together with Sebastiano Galeati by Cardinal Vicar Raffaele Monaco La Valletta ; Co-consecrators were Giulio Lenti and François Marinelli , both auxiliary bishops in Rome. The following year he went to Rome to take up a position as a canon lawyer. In 1883 he became consultor of the Holy Office and in November 1884 its assessor. On February 11, 1889 Leo XIII took him. as cardinal priest of Santi Bonifacio ed Alessio into the College of Cardinals . In 1890 the Pope appointed him prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics .

In early 1892 his health deteriorated and Cardinal D'Annibale retired to his hometown of Borbona. He received the sacraments here on July 16, 1892 and died the following day. He was buried in the local church of Santa Maria Nuova (today Santa Maria Assunta ).
