Giuseppe Meneghini

Giuseppe Meneghini (born July 30, 1811 in Padua , † January 29, 1889 in Pisa ) was an Italian geologist , paleontologist , surgeon , ophthalmologist and author .

Life and work

Meneghini first studied medicine in his hometown of Padua , where he became an assistant at the local department of botany , where he has already published some scientific papers on physiological and botanical topics. In 1839 he became professor of physics, chemistry and botany in Padua. In the course of the revolutionary activities in Austrian Italy, he had to flee Padua in 1848. He emigrated to Pisa, Tuscany, where he was given the chair for mineralogy and geology of the previous chairman Leopoldo Pilla (1805-1848), who died in the battles against Austria . There he acquired a great reputation for the paleontological collections, which were an important first focus in Pisa. At the same time he also became director of the geological cabinet.

In Pisa he published numerous papers on the geology of Tuscany . From 1853 to 1862 he made annual reports on the copper mines of the Apennines and on the Societas Mineralia anglo-toscana. Works on the paleontology of the island of Sardinia (1857-1860) and Lombardy (1867-1881) completed his scientific research. In recognition of his scientific achievements, he was accepted into the Prussian order Pour le Mérite for science and the arts in 1888 . In 1837 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Honor

The mineral meneghinite is named after Giuseppe Meneghini. In addition, the names of the ammonite genera Meneghiniceras Hyatt (since 1900) and Meneghinia Fucini (since 1931) keep the memory of the scientist alive.
