history

Until 1939

Piątek was mentioned for the first time in 1136 in a bull by Pope Innocent II . In 1339 Piątek received town charter. The town charter was confirmed in a document from 1357, which states that Piątek belongs to the Archdiocese of Gniezno . In the sixteenth century the city was known for its beer production. In 1800 there were 33 breweries in the city. As part of the Third Partition of Poland , Piątek fell to Prussia . In 1807 the city became part of the Duchy of Warsaw and in 1815 part of Congress Poland . In 1817 the city was largely destroyed in a fire. Since 1939

During the fighting in September 1939, the city was largely destroyed. 1,300 Jews lived in Piątek, that was more than a third of the population. In 1940 the German occupiers ordered a forced ghetto, and in April 1942 its residents were deported to the Chelmno extermination camp .

Between 1954 and 1972 Piątek was the seat of the Gromada Piątek , Łódź Voivodeship and since 1973 the seat of the Gmina Piątek. From 1975 to 1998 Piątek belonged to the Płock Voivodeship . On January 1, 2020, Piątek was restored to town.
