Life

Childhood and youth

Biesenkamp grew up with three siblings in Bochum , Rodgau and Heusenstamm and completed a degree in industrial engineering / electrical engineering in Darmstadt . Up to the age of 30 he played as a guitarist in various blues, latin, jazz and rock formations. His diploma thesis in 1989 was one of the first scientific papers on the subject of artist contracts in the music industry in Germany.

Career

After completing his studies, he held leading positions at the Bertelsmann Musik Group BMG for several years . During his time as head of the “Investments / New Businesses” department, he played a key role in the purchase and support of the “Logic” label. During this time, the label's I've Got the Power by the band SNAP achieved a number 1 hit simultaneously in both key markets of England and the USA for the first time in German history.

At the end of 1996, Biesenkamp started his own business as a music producer and founded Unicade Music in Munich . For his project Balibu he sponsored the young DJ Ole Wierk , who later made a name for himself as one of the masterminds behind Groove Coverage , and the then unknown rapper David Lubega . The single Let's Come Together of the project with the two artists was released in the fall of 1997 on East West Records / Warner Music.

In the mid-1990s, rap emerged as one of the great new music movements in the Anglo-American market. At that time, however, rap songs found only very limited approval on German radios, whereupon Biesenkamp developed the musical idea of a “melodic rap”, which he combined with Latin influences. He produced several tracks in the newly created musical style with rapper David Lubega. According to his specifications, at the end of 1997, in collaboration with the arranger Christian "Zippy" Pletschacher, the title Mambo No., initially intended for the film The Strange Behavior of Sexually Mature City dwellers during the mating season, was created . 5 (A Little Bit of ...) . A trumpet sample from Pérez Prados instrumental piece Mambo No. 5 used. The title, otherwise composed entirely from the vocal melody and text, should be a homage to the Mambo old master with the reference "A little bit of ..." .

Biesenkamp developed the image concept for the artist as a dandy womanizer with a white suit, Borsalino hat, gaiter shoes and Brazilian dancers on stage. He also suggested the stage name "Lou Bega" to David Lubega.

In April 1999, the single Mambo No. 5 was published in Germany and became a world hit. Initially, BMG / RCA did not want to publish the title in the United States despite several number 1 chart positions in Europe. Biesenkamp then took up talks with the then A&R manager of Sony Music and hired a sub-management team in Los Angeles. Eventually the title was published by RCA in the United States. Biesenkamp relocated his work there and founded a branch in New York City. He succeeded in bringing his artist on a major Cher tour through the United States as a special guest , which ultimately helped the album to great success there too.

The title Mambo No. 5 is still considered one of the fastest top 1 climbers in the US airplay charts . The album A Little Bit of Mambo peaked at number 3 on the US sales charts and earned its artist a Grammy nomination. The album sold over 3.5 million copies in the United States alone. At subsequent global concerts, Biesenkamp was responsible for the production of the shows and communication with local record companies and concert agencies.
