The Golani Brigade ( Hebrew חטיבת גולני), also known as Brigade No. 1 , is a major association of the Israel Defense Forces . It is subordinate to the 36th Division and traditionally associated with the Northern Command .

history

The Golani Brigade was set up on February 28, 1948 in Upper Galilee. At that time the Levanoni Brigade in Galilee was divided into the Golani Brigade and the Carmeli Brigade . The unit took since then to all conflicts in part, was involved in Israel, including the Suez Crisis , the Six Day War , the War of Attrition , the Yom Kippur War , the Operation Entebbe and the Operation Litani and the first and second Lebanon war. There were also several operations during the first and second intifada .

In 2013, Colonel Ghassan Alian was the first to be appointed a commander who, as a Druze, does not belong to the Jewish population.

The brigade participated in Operation Protective Edge in 2014 . On July 19, 13 of their soldiers were killed and the commander, Colonel Ghassan Alian, was wounded. The greatest loss, with seven dead, was caused by an armored personnel carrier crashing into an anti-tank mine ; according to other sources, their combat vehicle was hit by an RPG projectile. The 13 soldiers killed also included two US citizens .

insignia

The symbol of the brigade is a green olive tree with roots on a yellow background. The colors green and yellow symbolize the colors of the meadows in the Golan Heights . This is where the brigade was stationed after it was founded. The olive tree is known for its strong and firmly anchored roots in the land. Hence it was chosen as a sign. The soldiers of the unit wear a brown beret .

The Golani Brigade is known for disciplinary issues including insubordination to the commander; nevertheless, two of their commanders, Mordechai Gur and Gabi Ashkenazi, were appointed Chief of the General Staff of Israel. Several more of their military leaders were promoted to the rank of Aluf ( major general ).
