On Golem Beach

Golem ( Albanian  also  Golemi ) is a seaside resort in central Albania on the shores of the Adriatic Sea south of Durrës . The place in Qark Tirana  belongs to the municipality of Kavaja . Until 2015, Golem was an independent municipality ( komuna ) with 6,994 inhabitants in 2011.

Golem is located in the southern area of the Bay of Durrës. The town of Kavaja joins in the south, Synej in the southwest, Helmës in the southeast, Ndroq in the east and Rrashbull in the north. The area stretches from the flat beach of the bay into the hills of the hinterland. The villages of Kryemëdhenj, Tilaj, Seferaj, Golemas, Qeret, Karpen, Zikxhafaj, Kanaparaj, Agonas and Karpen i Ri are also part of the former municipality and today's administrative unit (Njësia administrative) Hills. Golem itself is also separated from the beach zone by the traffic routes.

The area of Golem was the site of the Battle of Dyrrhachium between Caesar and Pompey in 48 BC. During the Roman Civil Wars . The ancient Via Egnatia , the Roman road from Durrës to Constantinople , also passed Golem, which was already inhabited in the 1st century AD. Objects of the Koman culture from around the 7th century have been found on the hill Mali i Robit .

To this day, the Golem in the hinterland is strongly influenced by agriculture. In the 1930s, the Albanian-American Agricultural School of Kavaja was opened in Golem. After the Second World War a school for tractor drivers was opened there. Even today there is an agricultural school in Golem. In 2016, with the help of Kuwait, a new mosque in the classic Ottoman style was inaugurated.

Today the SH 4 , which has been expanded to a four-lane, separate expressway, and the Durrës – Peqin railway line of  the Hekurudha Shqiptare run through Golem .

The beach before the complete development (2008)

Golem has developed into one of the centers of summer tourism in Albania since the late 1990s . In particular, the beach zone, once a long pine forest , has become a densely built-up area with hotels, restaurants and beach houses. More than 42% of the houses were built after 2000 and 25% in the decade before (although no information is available for a further 25%). A distinction is made between the beach sections Golem in the north, Mali i Robit and Qeret in the south. In the far southwest of the bay is the village of Karpen with some accommodations and a campsite. While the dunes and pine forests to the north were built on over long stretches, a piece of the original coastal landscape has been preserved between Qeret and Karpen. A coastal wetland in this region is used for fish farming.
