Gonzalo de Toro

Gonzalo de Toro (born June 8, 1950 - October 3, 2011 ) was a Uruguayan politician .

De Toro, who was also active as a basketball player at a young age and became a champion (campeón federal) with the Uruguayan club Welcome in 1967, belonged to the Movimiento de Liberación Nacional in the 1970s and was imprisoned in Punta Carretas prison at the beginning of that decade . He was a member and co-founder of the Movimiento de Participación Popular (MPP). During the tenure of the Intendente Ricardo Ehrlich , de Toro was from 2005 until his successor Gerardo Urse at the beginning of March 2008 traffic director of the Intendencia of Montevideo . He then held the position of managing director (Gerente de Tránsito) in this department. At that time, until his death, he was also a member of the MPP, Lista 609, belonging to the Frente Amplio , in the Cámara de Representantes as a representative of the Department of Montevideo . In parliament he was a member of the following commissions: Comisión de transporte, comunicaciones y obras públicas as ordinary member, Comisión Especial con Fines Legislativos de Asuntos Municipales y Descentralización as chairman and Comisión Administrativa . He died at the age of 61 as a result of a very aggressive lung cancer . Before that, he had undergone chemotherapy at CASMU for several months . De Toro was buried in the Cementerio del Norte in Montevideo . The funeral took place in the presence of the President José Mujica and other Uruguayan political celebrities such as Lucía Topolansky , Fernando Lorenzo , Ana Olivera and Daniel Olesker .
