Gordon Dunlap Bennett

Gordon Dunlap Bennett SJ (born October 21, 1946 in Denver , Colorado ) is an American clergyman of the Roman Catholic Church and former Bishop of Mandeville in Jamaica .

Life

Gordon Bennett attended the Jesuit Loyola Grammar School in his hometown and, after his family moved to Los Angeles, the Jesuit Loyola High School there. After finishing school he joined the Jesuit religious order . He studied education and school administration at Loyola University in Los Angeles, the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley and Fordham University in New York City. He completed his studies with a Master of Arts (MA) in Secondary School Administration . On June 14, 1975 he was ordained a priest . Afterwards he was mainly active as a school principal at high schools of his order, u. a. at his former school, Loyola High School in Los Angeles.

Pope John Paul II. Appointed Gordon Dunlap Bennett on 23 December 1997 the auxiliary bishop in Baltimore and titular bishop of Nesqually . The Archbishop of Baltimore, William Henry Cardinal Keeler , donated him episcopal ordination on March 3 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Carlos Arthur Sevilla SJ, Bishop of Yakima and George Vance Murry SJ, Auxiliary Bishop in Chicago .

The Pope appointed him Bishop of Mandeville on July 6, 2004. In May 2006 he was charged with sexually assaulting a young adult in Jamaica. On August 8, 2006, he resigned from his position as bishop. A church investigation in 2009 acquitted him of the allegation. The case was resumed in August 2018. In March 2019, he was banned from all priestly activities in the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Motto

Gordon Bennett's motto is: Grace upon Grace (“grace upon grace”) and is taken from the Gospel of John ( John 1.16  EU ).
