Gottfried Handel

Gottfried Handel (born November 17, 1644 in Bayreuth , † September 14, 1698 in Bayreuth) was a German Protestant theologian and songwriter.

Life

After he was pastor in Thuisbrunn in 1664 and in Hetzelsdorf in 1666 , he went to Frauenaurach , where he worked at the local monastery. In 1670 he went to Heilsbronn as a preacher and professor . From there in December 1674 he was appointed to Ansbach as consistorial councilor, court and preacher, where shortly afterwards he became general superintendent . On May 6, 1677, he went to the University of Wittenberg , acquired on May 30, the licentiate in theology and the same year on August 21, he earned his doctorate in theology. In 1695 he resigned from his church offices. When he returned to his hometown, he took over the post of pastor, which he held until his death.

Handel had published several edification pamphlets in which there are also sacred songs. He also wrote several dissertations, programs, penitential and funeral sermons. Some of his songs found their way into the Ansbach hymn book from 1700. One of his songs is in the Freilinghausen hymn book.

His son is Christoph Christian Handel .
