Gottfried Hecking

Gottfried Hecking (born July 7, 1687 in Ulm , † June 6, 1743 in Augsburg ) was a German scholar, moral professor and school principal.

biography

Hecking attended school in Ulm and then studied from 1706 in Tübingen , later in Strasbourg and Jena . In Jena, Hecking received his doctorate in 1713 with the work De usu mysteriorum fidei in praxi vitae Christianae . He then went to Halle , where he came into contact with August Hermann Francke , whose practical pietism strongly influenced him. Hecking was called to his hometown Ulm in 1714 to succeed M. Dan. Ringmaker to compete as professor of morality . In 1718 he became rector of the Heilbronn grammar school . In Heilbronn , where Hecking taught for 25 years, the majority of his writings on moral and religious problems were created, for which the scholar became known far beyond his place of work. With Hecking's appointment to Heilbronn, the city council again linked hopes of being able to convert the local grammar school into an academic grammar school , but as with several predecessors, these hopes were not fulfilled. Nevertheless, the reputation of the scholar Hecking drew many eager to learn from all over Germany to Heilbronn, and the number of students at the grammar school reached a long-term high under his leadership. In the spring of 1743 he was called to Augsburg, where he was also rector and died almost two months after his arrival.
