Gottfried Suevus the Younger also: Schwabe (born April 10, 1652 in Wittenberg ; † May 3, 1718 ibid) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Gottfried was the son of Gottfried Suevus the Elder and his wife Anna Dorothea (née Reusner). He attended the city school in Wittenberg, which was under the direction of Rector Johann Peisker (1631–1711). After he was deposited in the matriculation registers of the university in his hometown on May 14, 1657 at the age of five, he completed a basic philosophical education there after graduating from school. For this purpose he attended Christian Röhrensee's lectures in ethics, with Konrad Samuel Schurzfleisch he dealt with history and with Balthasar Stolberg he expanded his knowledge of the Greek language.

He continued his studies in the winter semester of 1671 at the University of Leipzig with Paul Franz Romanus . Returning to Wittenberg, he attended the lectures of Werner Theodor Martini , Caspar Ziegler and Michael Friedrich Lederer . After some private lessons, he moved to Frankfurt / Oder University on September 15, 1675, where he became a student of Johann Friedrich Retz (1633–1707), Johann Christoph Bekmann and Samuel Stryk . Back in Wittenberg, he obtained his licentiate in law on July 30, 1683 with the work De Quorundam Iurium Obitu Singulari under Wilhelm Leyser II. On October 8, 1685, he received his doctorate in law.

In 1687 he became government advocate in Weißenfels and in 1688 protonotary at the Wittenberg University. In Wittenberg he became an assessor at the law faculty and lawyer at the Wittenberg court. In 1692 he became professor of the institutes and rose to a pandect professorship . Although he had become dean of the law school several times, he declined appointments to higher offices. After resigning his professorship in 1703, he resigned from his other offices in 1705 for health reasons. As a deeply religious person, he had read the Bible forty times. He died after persistent health problems.
