Gotthard Franz (born January 29, 1904 in Löbau , Saxony , † December 20, 1991 in Karlsruhe , Baden-Württemberg ) was a German civil engineer and university professor .

Life

Gotthard Franz, son of the senior teacher Oskar Franz and the Charlotte born Francke, devoted himself to studying civil engineering at the TH Dresden after completing his Abitur , which he obtained in 1928 with the academic degree of Dipl.-Ing. completed. This was followed by a three-year assistantship and a doctorate with Kurt Beyer . In 1934 he began his professional career at Wayss & Freytag , for which he worked for a total of 21 years. In 1938 Franz demonstrated the stability of the bridge girders of the Weg Hesseler overpass when it was moved sideways and, among other things, was responsible for the design of the Saar Bridge Dillingen between Dillingen , Saarlouis and Wallerfangen in 1954 .

In 1955 Gotthard Franz accepted the call to the professorship and head of the Institute for Concrete and Reinforced Concrete Construction at the Technical University of Karlsruhe , and in 1970 he retired . Franz - he published scientific articles in his fields of concrete, reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete - was awarded the Engels Memorial Medal by the TH Dresden in 1928, an honorary doctorate from the TU Braunschweig in 1975 and the medal for special services to the University of Karlsruhe. Gotthard Franz, who married Gertraude, born in Freieleben in 1934, died in 1991 five weeks before he was 88 in Karlsruhe. Two years after his death, a side street off Parkstrasse in the Oststadt district of Karlsruhe was named after him in Gotthard-Franz-Strasse .

From 1969 to 1990 he published the concrete calendar .
