Gotthard Wilhelm Freiherr von Budberg called Bönninghausen ( Russian Богдан Васильевич Будберг ; born June 17 . Jul / 28. June  1766 greg. In Riga , † July 17 . Jul / 29. July  1832 . Greg in Budbergshof in Riga) was a Russian Diplomat and civil governor of Estonia .

Life

Origin and family

Gotthard Wilhelm was a member of the German-Baltic Barons von Budberg . His parents were the Russian brigadier and heir to the Livonian estates Inzeem and Widdrisch Ludwig Otto Freiherr von Budberg (1729–1797) and Elisabeth Sophia, née von Löwenstern (1748–1811), the twin sister of Marshal Hermann Ludwig von Löwenstern (1748–1815) ).

In 1801 he married Charlotte Freiin von Campenhausen (1778–1831), a daughter of the Russian statesman Balthasar Freiherr von Campenhausen (1745–1800).

The marriage resulted in two daughters and a son:

  • Elisabeth (* 1802), ⚭ 1823 Nikolai Okunew (1788–1850), Russian lieutenant general
  • Alexander (1804–1879), Russian lieutenant general
  • Praskowia (1812–1839), ⚭ Alexei Rokassowski (1798–1850), Russian lieutenant general, brother of the governor general of Finland Platon Rokassowski (1800–1869)

Career

Budberg studied in Strasbourg before starting an officer career in the Imperial Russian Army . He then switched to the diplomatic service and had been employed by the College of Foreign Affairs since 1790. From 1792 legation secretary in Stockholm and from 1795 to 1796 representative of the ambassador ibid. He was chamberlain in 1796 and chamberlain in 1801 . In January 1800 he received his farewell, but in 1812 he was the Russian chargé d'affaires to the King of Naples . He was civil governor of Estonia from 1818 and became a privy councilor in 1826 . In 1828 he was honored with the Order of St. Vladimir II. Class. From 1813 to 1818 he was the lien owner of Treyden Castle , as well as owner of Widdrisch from his father's inheritance.

Budberg left seven volumes of travel diaries as manuscripts.
