Baron Platon Iwanowitsch Rokassowski ( Russian Платон Иванович Рокасовский , scientific transliteration Platon Ivanovič Rokasovskij ; born January 15, 1800 in the Saint Petersburg governorate ; † April 6, 1869 in Nice ) was a Russian general. He was Tsarist Governor General of Finland from 1861 to 1866 .

Life

Platon Rokassowski was the son of Brigadier General Ivan Nikititsch Rokassowski (* 1762) and his wife Charlotta Eleonora von Albedyll (1772-1825). He began his military career as early as 1812 as well as engaging in engineering . In the same year he became an ensign , in 1814 a second lieutenant , in 1815 a lieutenant and in 1821 a captain . In 1824 he was transferred to a war topographical unit. In 1826 he became a lieutenant colonel and from 1827 headed topographical work in the Grodno governorate / Poland .

In 1828/29 he was deputy quartermaster general in the Russian campaign against Turkey and took part in the war in the Caucasus between 1830 and 1832 . In 1835 he became head of the army staff in Orenburg . From 1843 he was General Provisioner in the Russian War Ministry . Since then he has devoted himself more and more to military administration.

Finland

From 1848 to 1854 Rokassovsky was adjutant to the Russian governor general for Finland. In 1854 he became a member of the Russian State Council . A year later, Rokassovsky was raised to the baronial status in Finland and served as Russian governor general from 1850 to 1854. In 1857 he became a member of the Committee on Finnish Affairs in Saint Petersburg . In 1859 Rokassovsky was appointed general of the infantry and had been a member of the Russian General Staff since 1864 .

From 1861 to 1866 Platon Rokassowski was the Russian governor general of Finland. Rokassowski did not oppose a reactivation of the Finnish constitution in 1863/64. He did not prevent the revival of the Reichstag, which had not been convened since 1809 . In 1866, however, he rejected the proposals for constitutional reform and thus came into conflict with Finnish politicians. Shortly thereafter, Platon Rokassowski was replaced by the new Governor General Nikolai Adlerberg . However, he remained active in high military positions in Russia until his death.

Private life

On November 27, 1835, Rokassowski married Alexandra Wassiljewna Kuzminskaja (1814-1896) in Orenburg. The couple had twelve children together, three of whom died immediately after birth.
