Gottlieb Leon
Gottlieb Leon , also Gottlieb Léon (born April 17, 1757 in Vienna , Roman Empire, † September 27, 1830 in Vienna, Austrian Empire) was an Austrian writer and librarian .
Life
Gottlieb Leon was born on April 16, 1757 in the city of Vienna, which at that time still belonged to the Holy Roman Empire . After studying at the University of Vienna , he became court master in 1778 and joined the Viennese court library four years later in 1782 . In 1791 he took over the work of scriptor and from 1816 was curator and head of the incunabula collection . Throughout his life he collected folk songs and, above all, published the songs of other peoples in book form.
His poetry in the style of German classical music, especially influenced by the Göttingen Hainbund , was considered technically good, but also not particularly imaginative. In the years 1795/96 he resigned as editor of the Wiener Muses Almanac (before 1777-1786 as Wienerischer Musenalmanach known) in appearance.
In 1827, at the age of 79, he retired due to illness. Gottlieb Leon, who belonged to Ignaz von Born's circle , died on September 27, 1830 at the age of 82 in the house at Am Gestade 7 and was buried in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof .
