Goumenissa (in Greek Γουμένισσα, pronunciation : [ ɣuˈme̞nisa ] ( f. Sg. )) Is a Greek wine-growing region . It is one of a total of 25 appellations of origin that have the status of an OPAP wine ( Onomasía proelefséos anotéras piótitos Ονομασία προελευσέως ανωτέρας ποιότητος ), the highest Greek quality level. The vineyards are located in the west of the Kilkis regional district , part of the Macedonia region . The area is named after the municipality of the same name Goumenissa .

After the destruction of old vineyards from 1917 by phylloxera and the subsequent economic crisis, viticulture only recovered from the 1970s. The well-known wine house Boutari bought grapes from the mid-1970s in order to make the region's wines known through its national and international distribution system. It is also thanks to the efforts of the wine house that Goumenissa received OPAP status in 1979. Boutari has been running its own winery in the region since 1984.

Much of the vineyards are located at an altitude of 150 to 250 m above sea level on the lower slopes of Mount Paiko . Most of the slopes are oriented to the east. The air carries due to the flat nature of the prefecture still maritime continental trains with a pleasantly warm summer and a cold winter, but in the snow is a rarity. Goumenissa has the warmest climate of the Naoussa and Amyndeo OPAP wine regions . In 2001 a planted vineyard area of 328 hectares was raised. In the immediate vicinity of the designation of origin there are an additional 263 hectares, which, however, are not allowed to use the name.

The statutory yield restriction is 70 hectoliters / hectare. The xinomavro that here Xinomavro is called "sour black", is the most important approved grape variety , within the legal requirements to dry wines must be processed. The leading variety is supplemented by a minimum of 20 percent Negoska . Both varieties must be mashed and fermented together in accordance with legal requirements .

Compared to the red wines of Naoussa , the single variety are made from Xinomavro, the growths of Goumenissa are lighter. They have a more fruity character and the tannin content is less pronounced. Although the climate of the Goumenissa growing area is warmer than that of Naoussa, the winemakers in Goumenissa have not yet started to postpone the harvest of the grapes in favor of higher must weights . Therefore, the wines are usually lighter than the red wines from Naoussa and more similar to the red wines from Amyndeo.

The wineries Aidarini Hristou, Arhontaki, Boutari, Eftihdi and Tatsi are important producers of these wines .
