The von Graffenried family is a Bernese patrician family . The family first appeared in the sources on October 4, 1272.

history

Originally from Grafenried BE , the family received citizenship rights from the city of Bern around 1300 . Since 1352 the family was represented in the small council and thus belonged to the Bern patriciate . Until 1798 she provided the city of Bern with four mayors , eleven Venners , five sack masters , numerous council members and officers. After Niklaus von Graffenried in Panex ( Ollon ) opened up the salt springs , the family repeatedly appointed the salt director. From the 17th century, in addition to serving the city of Bern, the mercenary service in the Netherlands and France developed another mainstay of the family. Individual family members also served as pages, valets and body guards at German royal courts. The Graffenried married preferentially with the von Wattenwyl , von Erlach , May and Zehender . The family box was founded on April 5, 1723 .

In the 19th century, many family members were still in salary and court services, but increasingly also as lawyers, bankers, merchants, asset and property managers and industrialists. The family still exists today and lives mainly in the Bern region.
