The metropolitan region of São Paulo ( Portuguese Região Metropolitana de São Paulo ), also known as Grande São Paulo, comprises 39 cities in the Brazilian state of São Paulo , which have grown together to form a single urban agglomeration due to the strong population growth in the 20th century . With over 21.5 million inhabitants, Grande São Paulo is the eleventh largest urban agglomeration in the world, and it ranks first within the metropolitan regions in Brazil .

For 2018, the population was estimated at 21,571,281 million, which is more than 10% of the Brazilian population.

The city of São Paulo also ranks sixth in the world in terms of population. In the immediate vicinity of the metropolitan region of São Paulo there are further urban agglomerations around the cities of Campinas and Santos with the metropolitan regions of Campinas and Baixada Santista . A process of conurbation can be observed around the cities of São José dos Campos , Sorocaba and Jundiaí . Together with the metropolitan region of São Paulo, almost 32.2 million people live in this area known as the Complexo Metropolitano Expandido .
