The Hungarian horehound ( Marrubium peregrinum ), also gray-horehound and Pannonischer horehound called, is a plant type from the genus horehound ( Marrubium ) in the family of Labiatae (Lamiaceae).

description

Marrubium peregrinum is a perennial , herbaceous plant with heights of up to 60 cm. The stems are covered with felt-like hairs with short, whitish or yellowish trichomes . Protruding branches arise from almost all armpits. The leaves are oblong or obovate, wedge-shaped at the base and notched-sawn at the edge. The hair is whitish tomentose, denser on the underside than on the top. The petiole is shorter than the blade.

The inflorescence consists of pseudo whorls with up to ten flowers , which are separated from each other or occur in clusters on the uppermost side branches. The prophylls are short, subpulate or tiny. The calyx tube is 3.5 to 5 mm long, ten-ribbed and tomentose with attached trichomes. The five calyx teeth are 1.5 to 3 mm long, lanceolate-sub, upright or later protruding. The crown is colored white and towers over the calyx teeth.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34 or 32.

Occurrence

The species is widespread in south-east and east-central Europe as far as the Caucasus and Turkey and reaches the Pannonian parts of Austria ( Burgenland , Vienna , Lower Austria ) on the north-western border of the closed area . In addition, there are some deposits in the arid regions of Central Europe, some of which have been stable for centuries, some inconsistent, and based on introduction. In Germany , two deposits in the eastern Harz foreland are still current; the species is threatened with extinction here .

The species is absent from Crete ; the synonym Marrubium creticum Mill. and its translation "Cretan horehound" are both factually incorrect.

Locations of the species are dry ruderal sites and ruderalized dry grasslands, especially above loess . The Hungarian horehound is a species of the Onopordion acanthii association.
