The Gray cinquefoil ( Potentilla inclinata ) is a plant species within the family of the rose family (Rosaceae). It is widespread in Eurasia .

description

Stem with foliage and stipules
The leaves are gray-tomentose underneath with curled and long straight hair.
The stipules of the stem leaves are entire or serrated but not deeply cut.
The five-fold flowers with yellow petals are usually less than 2 centimeters in diameter.

The gray cinquefoil resembles the silver cinquefoil ( Potentilla argentea ), but the stem is thicker and, like leaf and flower stalks, fluffy to shaggy or tomentose, underneath it is often covered with purple.

The gray cinquefoil is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 50 cm. The terminal stalk is ascending to upright, richly leafed and covered with loose to thick tomentose hairs with protruding hairs. The lower leaves are long-stalked, the upper ones seated and usually fingered in five to seven parts. The leaflets are 2 to 5 cm long, inverted-lanceolate, deeply serrated and serrated to pinnate and have five to eleven incisions on each side with six to nine teeth on each side. On the underside, they are gray, tomentose and have long curry hair on their veins. Their edge is flat. On top they are light green and loosely to moderately hairy.

The flowering period extends from May to August. The branched, panicle-thyrsic inflorescence is profuse . The hermaphroditic flowers are radially symmetrical and five-fold with a diameter of 1 to 1.5 centimeters . The five shaggy hairy outer sepals are 3 to 4 mm long and lanceolate. The five sepals are about 4 to 5 mm long, ovate and pointed. The five free, golden yellow to pale yellow petals are very broad, obovate and shallow with a length of 5 to 7 millimeters. There are 20 stamens .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14, 28 or 42.

ecology

The fruits of the gray cinquefoil can be spread by the wind.

Occurrence and endangerment

The cinquefoil is a continental floral element . The gray cinquefoil is widespread in central, southern and south-eastern Europe from central France in the west to central Russia. It is also found in western and central Siberia , the Caucasus , Iran, and Anatolia . The gray cinquefoil occurs sporadically in Central Europe on the Middle Rhine, in the confluence of the Main and Neckar, on the lower Lech and in the Franconian Alb, in the Sauerland and in the Hessian highlands as well as in northern Switzerland; At the southern foot of the Alps , in Upper and Lower Austria, in Burgenland and in Styria it is rare.

The gray cinquefoil is rare in Germany and is mainly found in the middle and south of the area (often only synanthropic ). In the northern part of Germany it is probably completely absent. It is uncertain whether this species even belongs to the native flora in Germany. Although not particularly protected in Germany, it can be classified as highly endangered.

The gray cinquefoil thrives best on nutrient-poor and lime-poor, dry, loose and therefore often sandy or stony soils that should be somewhat loamy and may have a moderate amount of nitrogen. It colonizes dry grasslands and roadsides in Central Europe . Potentilla inclinata grows mainly in ruderal places such as roadsides, railway and flood dams, gravel pits and dry grass. It prefers lime poor, sandy to stony locations. It occurs in societies of the Sedo-Scleranthetea class, but also in those of the order Festucetalia valesiacae.
