The gray-headed fruit dove ( Ducula poliocephala ) is a monotypical , large species of pigeon birds. It occurs exclusively in the Philippines .

The stock situation of the gray-headed fruit pigeon is given as near threatened .

Appearance

The gray-headed fruit pigeon reaches a body length of about 40 centimeters. It is thus slightly larger than a wood pigeon . The tail accounts for 12.2 to 13.8 centimeters. The beak has a length of 1.9 to 2.3, the weight is about 620 grams. There is no noticeable gender dimorphism . In the female, only the vertex is a little greener and the chestnut brown spot on the throat is less sharply delineated.

The forehead and the reins are ash-gray and merge into a dark gray on the crown. The throat and nape are dark red-brown. The coat is dark green with a blue and bronze tinge. The elytra are dark green with a bronze and dark blue sheen. The arm and hand wings are black with a dark green sheen on the outer flags. The back and the upper tail-coverts are slightly lighter than the coat and have a bluish tinge. The upper tail-coverts are dark bronze-green, the individual feathers have a wide gray band in the middle, which is bordered by a narrow black band at the top and bottom.

The chin and throat are pale reddish brown and bordered at the bottom by a narrow gray band. The ear covers are pale pinkish gray. The fore neck and chest are dark bronze green with a blue tinge. The belly is pale brownish pink, the flanks are dark bronze green. The rump, the thighs and the under tail-coverts are dark maroon.

The iris is yellow inside and red outside. The dark circles are crimson. The feet are red.

Distribution area

The gray-headed fruit pigeon is found exclusively on the Philippine islands. These include Basilan , Biliran , Bohol , Catanduanes , Cebu , Dinagat , Leyte , Luzon , Masbate , Mindanao , Mindoro , Negros , Panay , Samar , Sibuyan and Tawi-Tawi .

The habitat of the gray-headed fruit pigeon are primary forests and old secondary forests. They are also found in forests with partial logging. The height distribution ranges from 600 to 1500 meters. Due to increasing deforestation , the gray-headed fruit pigeon has become rare on some of the islands and is now extinct on Cebu.

Way of life

The gray-headed fruit pigeon lives mostly solitary or in pairs. It stays mainly in the upper treetop area, but occasionally comes down into the undergrowth to look for food there too. During the rainy season, this species of fruit pigeon occasionally stays in the vicinity of settlements. On Mindoro, gray-headed fruit pigeons occasionally use the same resting places as white-cheeked pigeons and large Mindoro fruit pigeons .

The reproductive biology of this species has not yet been studied.
