The Graz miniatures are mostly made of bronze, three-dimensional miniature models of various sights in Graz .

Idea and project

The sculptures of the so-called Graz miniatures represent tactile models of various Graz sights. They show the Graz clock tower , the Graz Opera , the Graz Murinsel , the Kunsthaus Graz and the Graz City Hall .

The idea for setting up the Graz miniatures came from Kurt Hohensinner , a disabled pedagogue , former club chairman of the ÖVP in the Graz municipal council and since January 23, 2014, Graz city councilor for education , integration and sport , together with Alexander Ceh and Dietmar Ogris. In 2000, Hohensinner visited Disneyland in California with a group of disabled people as part of an internship in the USA . There Mickey Mouse , Donald Duck and their friends are made visible to blind people through small plastic dolls . The Disney sights were made available to the group of visually impaired people as wooden miniatures (tactile models) for understanding .

The Graz miniatures were created on Hohensinner's initiative for the visually impaired , blind and children as part of the Understanding Culture project and, with the exception of the town hall miniature, were realized by Christian Fuchs ( Organic Form Productions ). The town hall miniature comes from the Linz artist Günther Knoll. First of all, the Graz clock tower, in addition to an equally large shadow - a work of art for “Graz 2003” (when Graz was European Capital of Culture ) by Markus Wilfling - was also given the company of a “clock tower”.

Visually impaired and blind people can find their way around in a spacious building and get to know it just as well as people with healthy eyes; however, it is often difficult for them to imagine a building and its shape as a whole. The five detailed tactile models, on which people with visual impairments - but also all children - can better experience and grasp the respective building, are positioned in front of or in the depicted cultural buildings.

City councilor Hohensinner hopes that tactile models of the Graz country house and the Graz cathedral can also be realized in the future .

Murinsel miniature

The tactile model of the Murinsel miniature is currently not accessible because, according to the Murinsel coffee house operator, it was stolen on 9 January 2014 in the summer of 2013. A corresponding police report was filed, but so far without success.

Others

Similar models are also available in Würzburg . A similar model can also be found next to Vienna's St. Stephen's Cathedral .

At the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress in Koblenz there is a bronze model of the fortress in the first courtyard of what was once the second largest German military installation. In Regensburg, on the banks of the Danube downstream, next to Regensburg's oldest restaurant, the "Wurstkuchl", a bronze model of the old town, is also freely accessible.

Furthermore, the Ulm city model for the blind and sighted made of bronze can be found on Münsterplatz in Ulm ; it shows each of the 503 buildings in the city center, including the synagogue under construction, true to scale.
