Gregor Bühl

Gregor Bühl (* 1964 in Birkesdorf near Düren ) is a German conductor . One focus of his work is the field of opera .

Education and early employment

Gregor Bühl passed his Abitur at the Burgau-Gymnasium . During this time he learned all percussion instruments at the Düren music school . He then studied conducting at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf with Wolfgang Trommer . He also attended master classes with Ferdinand Leitner , Gary Bertini , and Hiroyuki Iwaki . Following the Berlin conducting course with Gerd Albrecht , he received the Ferenc Fricsay scholarship and was engaged as Albrecht's assistant at the Hamburg State Opera (1991–1995). Bühl won 2nd prize at the Nicolai Malko Competition for Conductors in 1995 in Copenhagen. He was also a scholarship holder of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and the DAAD ; In 1993 he received the Berenberg Bank Culture Prize .

Opera conductor

From 1995 to 2001 Bühl held the position of 1st Kapellmeister at the Hanover State Opera , where he took over the re-production of Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen in the 99/00 season . During his engagements in Hamburg and Hanover, he developed a wide-ranging opera repertoire, which includes the great pieces of German and Italian as well as important works of contemporary music theater.

Guest conductor led him to the German Opera Berlin , Stuttgart State Opera , Cologne Opera , Frankfurt Opera , the National Theater , as well as the operas of Lisbon , Gothenburg , Oslo , Caracas and Reykjavik . His debut at the Semperoper with Giacomo Puccini's Madame Butterfly led to a direct re-invitation for concert performances of the rarely performed Strauss version of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Idomeneo .

Bühl has a close relationship with the Royal Opera (Stockholm) , where he directs the new production of Wagner's Ring . The keystone of the production was set on September 15, 2007 with the Götterdämmerung premiere. From January 2008, four complete ring cycles followed. The entire production was broadcast on Swedish television in the winter of 2008 and is due to be released on DVD. The collaboration with the Royal Opera was continued in November 2008 with Tristan and Isolde .

Concert conductor

Gregor Bühl was on the concert podium with the radio symphony orchestras of Berlin, Hamburg, Leipzig, Hanover, Finland, Hilversum and Denmark, as well as the Helsinki Philharmonic, the German State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate and the symphony orchestras of Stavanger, Lahti, Trondheim, Kanazawa, Iceland and Israel as guests.

CD recordings

The CD "American classics" recorded for Teldec, with his wife Sharon Kam as a soloist, was included in the best list of the German record critics. Sharon Kam was awarded the 2006 Echo Klassik for the CD Sharon Kam - Works for Clarinet and Orchestra with works by Carl Maria von Weber , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , Louis Spohr and others, recorded with the MDR Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Bühl for Berlin Classics .

Bühl has been married to clarinetist Sharon Kam since 1994, has three children and lives in Hanover .
