Border between Latvia and Belarus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Latvia – Belarus border is a 173 km long external EU border that separates the two countries. The current border is based on the Latvian-Polish border from 1923, which was 105 km long, and in the southeastern part of the border with the Soviet Union . It runs in the southwest from the triangle Latvia - Lithuania - Belarus World icon to the northeast to the triangle Latvia World icon- Belarus - Russia .

history

During the Latvian War of Independence on January 30, 1920, the peace of Riga on February 1 established a demarcation line that coincided with the eastern border of the Latvian inhabited ( Latvian Ludzas apriņķis ). In March 1920 the Kurzeme Infantry Division of the Latvian Army occupied the Polish parts of the Drissa border district from Proškiai to Lake Asweja on the and on to the right bank of the Daugava . After the peace between Latvia and Soviet Russia on August 11th, the Latvian army withdrew from Drisa. Only the municipalities of Piedrujas and Pustiņa (Robežnieku) fell to Latvia.

In the spring of 1920 the Polish army occupied the cities of Grīva, Borne, Borovka (Silene), Demene, Kalkun, Saliena and Skrudaliena (in the former parish of Überlauz ), which administratively belonged to the then Polish district of Braslavas. After the withdrawal of Polish troops during the Polish-Soviet war in the summer of 1920, the area was occupied by the Latvian army.

Borderline

The delimitation of the Latvian-Belarusian border began after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1997 and was decided on April 10, 2002 in Rīgā with the signing of the final protocol. The length of the border is 172.912 km and it is marked with 417 border posts, including 17 buoys on the border in the valley path of the Daugava and in other waters.

From the Latvian side there are designated border areas. Solid border fortifications are rarely found. As an external border, the EU and the provisions of the Schengen Agreement are increasingly calling for an effective defense against illegal immigrants. From the Belarusian side, access in the wider border area is only possible with a permit, but is often bypassed. The border fortifications are much more massive and well monitored, but are seldom visible from the Latvian side. There are 306 settlements in the border protection strip, some of which are many kilometers wide, which are only accessible to residents, border protection agencies and selected visitors with a special permit.

Crossing the border into Latvia requires a visa according to the law of the European Union (Schengen Agreement) and to Belarus a Belarusian visa. In the local border traffic special provisions.

But there have been occasions when selected Belarusian citizens took part in joint festivities at the three-country corner.
  3. a b c d Only small, visa-free border traffic for residents of the border areas after special permission, often limited in time, no continuous opening times, no freight traffic.

In the meantime there is only one daily passenger connection between Riga and Minsk (№ 088Б) and back (№ 087Б). The route is more important for freight traffic.
