geography

The Daugavpils district is the fourth largest in Latvia with 1877 km². It is sparsely populated and rural.

The district is rich in lakes. The Daugava flows through it. The stream and the banks of eight river loops between Kraslava and Naujene have formed the 120 km² Daugavas loki nature park (German: Düna-arches) since 1990 . The southern border of the district is also the state border with Lithuania and Belarus .

history

In 2009, 19 municipalities of the former Daugavpils district ( Latvian : Daugavpils apriņķis , since 1949 Daugavpils rajons ) merged to form the district of the same name.

Historically, the area was part of the mastership of Livonia ( Komturei Dünaburg , 1367–1559), the Livonian Voivodeship ( trakt Dyneburski , 1629–1772) and the Vitebsk Governorate ( Динабургский уезд , 1802–1917).

population

The Daugavpils district has 25,499 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2015). Only three of the approximately 650 places in the district had more than 1000 inhabitants in 2015, namely Kauja, Lociki and Vecstropi, all of which are located in the Daugavpils area.
