The district of Sēja (Sējas novads) is located in southwestern Livonia in Latvia northeast of the capital Riga.

geography

Gauja and Ķīšupe flow through the area. A 2133 hectare marshland is under nature protection .

history

Here was the Livonian settlement Ennistele, which played a role in the crusades of the 13th century. The later manor fell to the Seyge family in 1577 (also written as "Zöge" in some documents). The German name “Zögenhof”, which was common until 1920, and today's name “Sēja” are derived from this. From 1577 to 1724 Gut Zögenhof was - with interruptions - owned by the Zoege von Manteuffel family , and from 1751 to 1920 by the Counts of Dunten .

population

There are three villages in the district: Pabaži, Murjāņi and the administrative center of Loja . 2496 inhabitants (2010) live in the Sēja district.

In 2006 the Sēja municipality was transformed into a district ( novads ) without changing its borders .
